Redskins' Taylor faces 46 years in prison

MIAMI (AP) - Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor faces up to 46 years in prison after two additional assault charges were filed against him Friday.

Michael Grieco, an assistant state attorney, said the charges reflect Taylor's alleged threatening of three people with a gun in an armed confrontation over an all-terrain vehicle on June 1. Taylor, 22, now faces three counts of aggravated assault, each of which carries a minimum sentence of three years and a maximum of 15 years in prison. He also faces one misdemeanor battery charge that carries a potential one-year prison term.

Trial is scheduled to begin March 20 for Taylor, a former University of Miami star who signed a seven-year, $18-million contract after being drafted by the Redskins in 2004. He has six interceptions and 120 tackles in his two seasons.

Taylor's attorney, Edward Carhart, said the additional charges surprised him.

"The state has had this case since June and now they're filing these added charges? It's bizarre," Carhart said.

Taylor has pleaded not guilty and remains free on $16,500 bond.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that he serves not a second in the big house. He's afforded the safety of celebrity and wealth...essentially has the prosecution covered.

While my understanding is the people he had threatened were world class scumbags and probably had it coming to 'em anyways (this is what I've been told)...

He's afforded the safety of celebrity and wealth

Like the play on words, but sadly, there is another brand of justice in this country for those of extreme wealth.

Am I the only one who thinks the threat of 46 years in prison just seems over the top, even if he is a spoiled rich athlete who needs to be taught a lesson?

He may well have been justisfied-- I just couldn't work my puns into a scenario whereby the victims had it commin' :).

But seriesly, as a Cowboys fan it may surprise others that I'd much rather see Taylor compete out on the field than rot in jail because he's a heck of a player and I enjoy watching him. I'm getting a little weary of seeing talented athletes self destruct and he's dangerously close to heading down the path.

As an Eagles fan, I'd put him right up there with your boy, Roy Williams.  Those two, in different ways, are two of the best I've ever seen, and I've had the pleasure of watching Brian Dawkins through his prime.  Dawk is an Eagles all timer, but he's not in the league that Taylor and Williams seem headed to.

As much as you hate to see those guys tear apart your offensive game plan, you can't help but admire their ability.  Any real football fan's gotta appreciate something like that.

The papers always say that the accused faces some outrageous number of years in prison if convicted. It operates on the assumption that he gets the maximum sentence on every count and has to serve it back-to-back.

This guy won't serve 5 minutes in jail. It'll be plea-bargained down to misdemeanors, he'll pay a large fine, and have a few years of probation, just like Michael Irvin.

Well, you're right about that. It's a common practice and I have seen it myself. I just think this headline is a particularly egregious example of exaggeration.

Definitely egregious exaggeration. I'm not condoning his behavior but there are murderers and armed robbers who get out in less than 10.

He should have done the crime in Vermont.

That is BS. Celebrities and wealthy people are able to afford top notch legal council, but they are also targeted and pursued much more aggressively than ordinary joes by police and prosecutors.

If an ordinary person got into a minor altercation with someone at a bar, the situation would be handled by security and then each party would go their separate way. If a celebrity is involved, the cops will called and the prosecutor will try to nail the celebrity to the wall in order to further his own career and to appear that he is not giving a celebrity a break.

The boat incident with the Vikings is a prime example. If the Viking players had been just ordinary people, the captain of the boat would have just cut the trip short and returned to shore. Since celebrities were involved, it was escalated.

Celebrities may tend to beat a rap frequently, but in most cases it is due to the charge against them being completely petty.

For a conservative message board, I am amazed by the amount of class envy that is present.

That's okay. It's always off-set by a little celebrity worship.

I just noticed that you may have written your post in jest. Now that I read it again, I see it was an attempt at humor.

Don't take what I posted personally, but there are just so many posters that have an unhealthy hate for all professional athletes, especially black ones that are flamboyant.

I grew up a Cowboys fan so you're alright in my book. I'm more of a Falcon fan now but I still like to see the Cowboys do well. I just hope they can succeed before Parcells and his "I have to be begged to come back every year" attitude sinks them back into mediocrity.

He'll probably become a Cowgirl if he can keep his butt out of jail......or when he gets out of jail. :-)

Get a grip, Jeff. My first post was entirely a joke merely to amuse myself. Take a few deep breaths and you'll feel better.

Really? Which celebrities have you seen worshiped on FR? The only two I've ever seen worshiped has been George & Laura Bush.

I have seen a lot of over the top admiration of Brett Favre and athletes from the poster's childhood.
