U.S. Luger Injured in Frightening Crash (Samantha Retrosi)

U.S. luger Samantha Retrosi was carried off on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance after a frightening crash on the second run of the Olympic competition Monday night. She appeared to be unconscious and sliding underneath her sled through at least two curves of the track, and fans who were lined alongside the wall waved their arms to summon medical personnel to the scene.

A large drape was pulled across the curve of the track where Retrosi stopped, shielding her from view. There was no immediate word on the severity of her injuries.

Second nasty crash for an American athlete today. First the female skiier, and now this.

Personally, I think lugers are nuts. The only ones crazier are the skeleton riders, I think they're the ones that go down headfirst?

Hi steelcurtain-

Yes, they're sports. You and I could practice them for years and we still wouldn't be as fast as the current Olympic lugers, bobsledders, and skeleton riders.

The luge is a lot like riding underneath a car... without the car.

Fox is reporting that Retrosi suffered a concussion and lacerations to her chin in the crash, but is otherwise uninjured.

Skier Lindsey Kildow also escaped serious injury in a horrific practice crash during downhill prep. Kildow suffered bumps and bruises, but officials are now saying she will attempt to race.

Both crashes are extremely scary looking, and these young women are very lucky to have suffered relatively minor injuries.

Luger Has Concussion; No Memory of Crash
Staff and agencies
13 February, 2006

By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer 23 minutes ago

CESANA, Italy - U.S. luger Samantha Retrosi was injured following a frightening crash on the second run of the Olympic competition Monday night, and was taken by a helicopter to a hospital in Turin for observation.

"It was a bad crash. ... But the bottom line is that she‘s going to be OK," U.S. team leader Fred Zimny said.

A large drape was pulled across the curve of the track where Retrosi stopped, shielding her from view. She was taken to the facility‘s medical tent and accompanied by her parents, but U.S. luge spokesman Jon Lundin said Retrosi was conscious when she was loaded into the ambulance.

Watching on a large video screen while talking with reporters, Germany‘s Tatjana Huefner gasped and stared blankly at the image for several seconds.

Nope! I opened this thread specifically because I read it that way, and was trying to figure out how the headline made any sense...

Some one recently defines the difference between a sport and a game as - a game is where you can stop to have a smoke and a drink. A sport, you can not.

This came after a photo of John Daly was published, puffin away, while waiting to putt.
