Meanwhile,20 miles away, in Hartselle, Alabama, the fire chief lowered the flags to half-staff in respect for the fallen fire fighters. He then informed Mayor Dwight Tankersley, who was at a play-off basketball game, of what he had done. Mayor Tankersley called the fire station later and ordered the flags to be raised to the top of the flag poles. After some time, the mayor called back and told the fire chief to lower them again. allegedly the mayor didn't know if it was legal to lower the flags in respect, unless it was the President.

Only the President can order the US flag to half-staff from what I remember.
My GGGrandfather who was killed at Appomatox was a Tankersley from Ala.

Not so! The highest elected official of any municipality can order this. It doesn't have to be the death of a President, Vice President, Senator, stc. It can be in respect of any person, prominent or not. The President orders this over governmental buildings. Fire and Police Departments, as well as municipal buildings can do this at will, to show respect, with or without approval of mayor.

I am really starting to question his rationale for many things he has done recently, that has many, many people wondering, "What the hell is going on."

My Father was the last mayor so off course I have a biased opinion on how things are being handled.
