There are no movie theaters at my present duty station, and I don't know any of the actors/actresses nominated for the oscars.
My prediction is that "brokeback mountain" will win in order to appease the gay community and the left, but the real winners are the people that won't see the trash that hollywood puts out
I meant for "Best Picture". Charlize Theron is nominated, I'm not sure of any other category.
Oh...she's a good actress, though I didn't see the movie. I don't think she's gotten "the right" role yet.
This year's crop of movies were all boring. None of them got me off the couch and into the theater.
any movies that deal with homos, transexuals, suicide bombers, or rewritting history with the sole purpose to push a liberal agenda will have the best chance of winning.
Brokeback Mountain and anything else that glorifies the queer lifestyle.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
A female serial killer (evil men made me kill them)
Euthanasia (I loved her therefore I killed her
And this years sure fire winner/"hit": homosexual sheepherders
Meanwhile, the movies that were decent and made a ton of money at the box office lare completely ignored.
Sorry; until adults who are not perverts take control of Hollyweird and decide who/what rates the coveted Oscar, they can count us out.
One more thing; as long as those running the show consistently hire "hosts" who are potty mouthed and decidedly Anti American, they will continue to lose the viewer ship of my family and millions of others.
This is all very sad, I used to love film; the movies and those men and women who were genuine, bonified "Stars".
To quote Steely Dan; today all we have are:
"show business kids making movies of themselves who don't give a ---- about anybody else".
LAJ left his own thread. LOL.
I know that the female director had probably intended to lionize her-or at least obscure the moral depravity of her crimes-but the overall impression you're left with is one of revulsion at this woman's despicable deeds, not a misplaced sympathy.
Aside the first victim, most of the homicides she commits are portrayed accurately, i.e. as premeditated murder, and the contrast between her accomplice-who's played by Christina Ricci-who actually does have a conscience is interesting to watch.
Like I said, it probably wasn't intended this way, but it's definitely not a stereotypical liberal guilt-trip, glorifying criminal depredations.
At least, that was what I took away from the film.
"Million Dollar Baby" deserved "Best Picture" last year. I haven't seen any of this year's nominees.
The film pretty much came off as intended. The director has said as much. The acting was terrific, the screenplay was good and the direction was good.
The only question I had: why make a movie about someone with a head filled with broken wiring?
There have been some good movies made about deranged females, e.g. The Snake Pit, Girl Interrupted, I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, that black & white movie whose title I can't remember, the film adaptation of the Bell Jar.
I guess the premise behind the Charlize Theron film was that a female serial killer is such an anomaly.
I might have brought my own prejudices to the movie. I'm not a big fan of serial killers. They hold little or no fascination for me. They're portrayed as evil, blah, blah, blah...basically, they're idiots with heads filled with bad wiring.
Theron was fascinating to watch "act." She does this thing with her body, an aggressive stance that she maintains throughout the movie. Probably comes from being a dancer, but I don't believe I've ever seen a female actor use her body in quite the same way.
What's an "Oscar"?
Instead of, ya know, hiring a more accomplished actress that wasn't quite as attractive as Ms. Theron.
It really illustrates the animating mindset of Tinseltown, doesn't it?
Although I didn't watch it, I think King Kong will sweep the awards.
Both sides got something out of the deal. The producers, etc. got a "name" they could send out on the talk show circuit and to magazine interviews. Theron got a role in which she could make her bones "acting" to move her career up a notch and give her more credibility for more challenging roles.
Everyone walked away happy.
