I had a personalized Academy Award night. Watched Patton. Then I watched Young Frankenstein. OK, so that wasn't an Oscar winner, but it was a danged fun movie.

Oh, Sweet mystery of life at last I've found you!

I spent this evening scraping off the feedlot. Very similar to the Oscar ceremony, I suppose, but the cows are much more well behaved than the average starlet and actually do something productive for a living.

I don't know what farming or ranching is like. But I'm guessing you were cleaning up the crap while they were spreading it around at the Oscars!

I take it Texas and Omaha are not your money games?

I learned to play no limit low ball as my first game. No limit low ball with a $20 dollar buy in was not an intimidating game.

The board games later became the most profitable, but I played low stakes, never got beyond 20-40 range. Was damned hard to make an average of 10-15 bucks an hour, and that was being very selective in picking which games to take a seat at.

"And for the life of me I couldn't understand how poker became a spectator sport...."

If it has to be explained, you will never understand.

She's pretty good at it and frankly, a better player than actress.

Yeah, I don't think many people where like "Oh my God, where's Jennifer Tilly?" It's not like she was big blockbuster star.

Nonetheless, she made the right choice. I'd rather play a poker tournament too.

Amen to that!

Can't understand why poker has become a spectator sport?

The invention of the camera table has made it so. Seeing the player's hole cards makes it much more interesting to watch when you know if they're bluffing.

I watched an old replay of the WSOP from the late 80's or early 90's and it wasn't nearly as interesting.

Anything that relies partially or wholly on 'pure' chance, to me isn't poker.

All poker relies partially on pure chance (luck). If it didn't there would be no money to be made. The best players would always win, and the other players would stop playing. If you want a game of pure skill, play chess. I play all forms of poker, and they all require skill, just different kinds and to different degrees. Stud requires lots of skill in remembering exposed cards and applying the information to your hand and your opponents likely hand. Draw is all about playing your own cards and reading your opponents, since you have no information at all about what your opponents hold. Holdem is somewhere in between, since you have some information about what your opponent could have, but there are far more possible hands since at least 47 cards are "live" at all times. But the real skill in No Limit Hold'em is in varying your bet sizes to give your opponents the wrong odds to call, in other words giving them the opportunity to make mistakes.

"There is a big difference between playing the odds and playing the players."

Oh look, I'm quoting myself. :-)

I guess I've been doing it all wrong and every hand isn't a winner. Silly me.

"Bound" is a good film. Nice kind of Neo-Noir with a more than capable cast doing some of their best work!

Especially Joe Pantaliano, who excels in slimy creepiness, and Chris Meloni; who was just plain scary!

Congrats to Ms. Tilley for her newfound acumen in Texas Hold 'Em!

Jack.
