Anyone catch George Clooney's acceptance speech after winning Best Supporting Actor? One of his comments was that he was proud to be a part of an industry which is out of touch with America. According to Mr. Clooney, Hollywood is ahead of the curve, focused subjects like AIDS and Civil Rights when they were considered taboo with mainstream America. He cited the 1939 Academy Award given to African-American actress Hattie McDaniel for her performance in Gone With The Wind.
George Clooney is entitled to his opinion. I happen to believe he's full of himself if he thinks Hollywood has that kind of influence.
Ms McDaniel played a maid sympathetic to the South. Her achievement didn't change civil rights in America or even Hollywood. It would be another sixty years before another African American actress would win an Academy Award. In fact, one can argue that the total number of African-American Oscar winners in the major categories is smaller than the number of African American cabinet heads in the current administration.
Real people, not actors, challenge and change conventional beliefs. I doubt Miss McDaniel's breakthrough inspired Martin Luther King. His inspiration came from Ghandi and Jesus Christ - the latter who, ironicaly is consider taboo in Hollywood today.
Sweet monkey dumpling, the man's insane!!
Likewise, Georgie.
Well, it's not like being an actor in HIS movies will pay any bills.
Well said... Clooney is a Looney!!!
I happen to believe he's full of s###.
Whether he's proud over it or not shouldn't matter. He is.
The fact that he's proud about just adds yet another peckerhead merit badge to his dossier of peckerheadedness.
OK, I'll bite? Who is George Clooney? Is he a person of importance? He's not one of those Hollywood dudes who played with the sheep, is he?
Guy's a nut ~ certifiable ~ Hollywood's attention span rarely gets beyond booty.
Hardly progressive.
You'd have to figure that something's amiss mentally.
He certainly has no esteem issues.
Box offices are dwindling; is it going to pay for Georgie boy and Hollywood to be "ahead of the curve"?
Clooney? Best supporting actor? For what? Brokeback Mountain? Why? Was he on bottom?
He recently said he cost Kerry the election by not being more supportive. GIANT EGO!
I would argue that Hollywood did as much to get George W. Bush re-elected than Ken Mehlman, the GOP Chairman did.
One of the problem's Hollywood shares with modern liberalism is its cynical streak. Like it or not, people want to feel good about their country, and this Baby Boom generation has given us downers like 'Syrianna, Platoon, etc.'
What are you watching the Oscars for? Oh, it's to keep the rest of us informed.
I pitty the guy when he becomes senile.
