Is The Duke Rape Story Unraveling?
Yahoo ^ | 04/12/06 | Tom Bevan

There's probably no better way to get a feel for what's been happening in the Duke University lacrosse team rape story than to read a series of revised news alerts on the case issued by the Durham Police's Crimestoppers unit. An initial release sent out April 3 which offered cash rewards for tips about the case read: "The victim was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."

Yesterday at 11:16am, according to the Raleigh News & Observer, Crimestoppers issued a revised version of the same news release which dropped the entire second sentence about a "horrific crime" and also added a qualifier to the first: "The victim alleges that she was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed." [emphasis added]

A mere eighteen minutes later a third revision was issued, changing the word "victim" to "complainant."

The evolving facts in the case seem to not only warrant those revisions but also to suggest that the case may be in the process of unraveling.

The DA has acted like a fool. His upcoming election is most likely contributing to his unwise behaviour.

We shall see if the evidence saves him and condemns the other fools.

The evidence is the key.

At this point I'm just waiting to hear what the courts decide. I don't trust defense attorneys any more than I trust most prosecutors.

It wouldn't be the first time a defense team set out to destroy an accuser. Remember the guy who raped and murdered the little girl next door? In that case it became all about tyhe victims family and friends when the defense knew their client was guilty.

"fielding questions about the case from African-Americans who angrily suggested that if the racial components of the case were flipped (i.e. a white woman accusing 46 black players of rape) the whole team would have been arrested on the spot."

I suggest that if the racial components were flipped and 46 black players had DNA samples taken and one white player didn't then the ACLU, Jessie (Shakedown) Jackson and the rest the race baiters would be screaming even louder than they are now.

I've been trying to keep a wait-and-see attitude, but think that the DA's grandstanding via numerous press conferences has been highly inappropriate.

African-Americans who angrily suggested that if the racial components of the case were flipped (i.e. a white woman accusing 46 black players of rape) the whole team would have been arrested on the spot.

That is complete and utter B.S. If the roles were reversed, the authorities would be so afraid of calling down the wrath of the race baiters they would be limiting the amout of information that was being released to the media. Not to mention the races of the principles involved would be omitted from reports.

Why would the DA have someone hire the girl to tell such lies? That is the lowest political scheme I can imagine.

I know that there are Carolina grads who have it in for Duke, but this is a bit much.

Yeah. The majority on here were screaming the same thing in the Kobe Bryant case. They had Bryant convicted and in prison for life.

Only, Kate Faber's accusation of rape was torn apart by a smart female defense attorney, whose digging uncovered the fact that the victim's "rape" was sandwiched in between sexual encounters with two other men!

Do you know that 50% of women who make accusations of rape are lying?.

As others have noted, she made some specific allegations about what happened and where it happened. Yet, at this time, no corroborating evidence has surfaced. And there may be some contradictory statements. A brand new DA fresh out of law school would be very very reluctant to file any charges in this situation without some solid substantiation. I think this case is unraveling. Her character as to past events will be strongly attacked if she takes the stand. Still, there might be a couple of guys in trouble, but I don't think it will be for the most serious charges.

I would like to remind everyone the defense team is made up of UNC lawyers. Most duke grads go out of state to practice law.

Solicitation or Conspiracy to committ kidnapping. Anything less than rape, will be laughed out of court.

inappropriate alright!

I mean he presented his reasoning for this case continuing to go forward in spite of no DNA being found, the "victim" was able to identify the Duke boys in a lineup.

Well duh! Mr Prosecutor, nobody denies they were all at the same party together! It's not like they boys would be HARD TO IDENTIFY!!! It wouldn't take much of a memory for this stripper to recall them out of a police lineup. It proves NOTHING!!!

District Attorney Mike Nifong, however, continues to insist he believes the alleged victim was sexually assaulted and claims she was able to identify one of her attackers last week

See how ridiculous this statement really is?

From Sweet Pollypurebred's yack show.......

Source: No arrest will be made for at least the next few days.

Is "at least the next few days" more or less than several days?

How about the terms......

The Durham Debacle at Duke University

Nifong feels that it is important that this trial continues to be pushed, even as he disregards the code “Innocent until proven guilty.”

It almost seems that he is deliberately attacking the players at Duke. The team has written only a four paragraph statement about the incident, and other than that, they have chosen to remain secretive about the subject.

I wasn't real thrilled that, according to police, most of the Duke players were not being cooperative with investigators, and if true, that still doesn't sit right with me.

Having said that, as of now, it looks like another out of control DA with nothing, not even squat.
