Expectant mom dies in collision
A 27-year-old expectant mother died in a head-on collision Sunday on U.S. 31 in Shelby County, authorities said.
Sarah Porter, 27, of Jemison died in the 11:20 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Tim Sartain, Alabama State Troopers spokesman. She was six months pregnant, said Doug Ballard Jr., Shelby County coroner.
Her husband, 29-year-old Heath Porter, remained in critical condition at UAB Hospital Sunday night, said Bob Shepherd, hospital spokesman.
Marco Guarviola, 26, address unknown, a passenger in the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that collided with the Porters' 2002 Volkswagen, was also taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed as critical Sunday night, Shepherd said.
Manuel Valdez, 22, address unknown, who was also in the truck, was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Efforts to reach a hospital spokesman Sunday night were unsuccessful.
The accident, which occurred in the Saginaw community just south of Alabaster, is under investigation, Sartain said. He declined to provide details.
Several serious accidents have occurred at the site, Sartain said.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Accident fatalities are always sad, Sartain said.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.

Borders ping?
UGH!!
Do you know the difference between the victims of the car wreck? The husband who is in critical condition will be required to pay his hospital bill.
How on earth does the nationality of the driver have ~anything~ to do with the story?
Or has it finally come to the point that any time a hispanic last name is mentioned within an article, it instantly becomes an immigration issue?
How do you even know the driver is Mexican, for that matter?
You are so correct. When I was pregnant with my now 21 month old, I had to be seen at the high risk clinic at UAB because of my age and some complications.
We had to pay, along with insurane, but the place was full of Mexican's getting free medical care during their pregnancies.
I should of added the information I heard on the radio regarding the rest of the issues in the story.
My point about the Birmingham news is that they will intentionally leave out the pertinent details.
Did you notice that the Birmingham news even failed to say which one was driving?
Another reason it matters is because we are required to have insurance.
They can't get insurance because they have no DL's. So we, the citizens end up paying and paying when these people cause tragic accidents like this.
Were the immigrants "illegal"?
Or does it just bother you that they're Mexican?
Because Lord know they're the ~only~ folks who ever get into car wrecks.
*rolls eyes*
No mention of whose fault the accident was. I assume it is under investigation. Prayers for everyone involved.
I don't know that he was illegal. He was swearing at those surrounding him and at the police officer in English.

Pregnant woman, two others injured in hit-and-run
Melissa Pinion-Whitt
UPLAND - A suspected drunken driver was arrested Monday after he struck three vehicles, injuring three people including a woman who was about seven months pregnant, police said.
Police booked Richard Soto, 22, of Ontario, into West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, felony driving while under the influence and possession of stolen property.
Police said Soto was driving a stolen 1997 Ford Aerostar south on Campus Avenue near 13th Street at 3:16 p.m. when he struck two vehicles and drove away.
At 11th Street and Second Avenue, Soto ran a stop sign and broadsided the driver of a Chevrolet Astro van. The impact caused the van to roll onto its roof. A pregnant Upland woman riding in the vehicle, along with her 2- and 5-year-old sons, received injuries in the crash.
Soto ran from the vehicle, but was chased by several witnesses to the 600 block of north First Avenue. The witnesses pointed out Soto to Upland officers who came to the scene.
Police said Soto is suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol and stimulants. He also had drug-related arrest warrants.
The pregnant woman was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and the children were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. Their conditions were not known.
address unknown
How do you know they caused the accident?
So they're illegal then. Or are you just assuming?
And here's a new flash - plenty of jerks drive around with no insurance, not just imported jerks.
I don't care what race they are. Why do you?
I care that uninsured drivers, unlicensed drivers are terrorizing the roads and citizens of this state.
Sue the Govt. for not securing the border and causing harm.. take it all the to the SCOTUS..

OK, well here's another story: A DRUNK ILLEGAL smashed into my brother head-on last week. Since he has NO INSURANCE, our rates (including my brother's who thankfully escaped with minor injuries; who gives a crap about the illegal) will all rise accordingly.
People tend to swear in their native tongue.
I don't recall my insurance company ever asking for proof of my driver's license. Why would they care? Now many states will not give you a driver's license without proof of insurance.
Another reason it matters is because we are required to have insurance.
They can't get insurance because they have no DL's. So we, the citizens end up paying and paying when these people cause tragic accidents like this.""
I researched my records on my auto insurance.
Found a bill from 1993 from State Farm, who I have been with about 25 years.
In 1993, my "uninsured motorist" coverage cost me about
1/2 of one percent of my premium.
Today, with absolutely no accidents or tickets on my record, I am paying more than 30% of my premium for "uninsured motorist" coverage.
This is due to illegal intruders, nothing else, IMO.
This isn't the same story.
The details are all different - vehicles, hospitals, etc.
Another reason it matters is because we are required to have insurance.
They can't get insurance because they have no DL's. So we, the citizens end up paying and paying when these people cause tragic accidents like this.""

Doesn't prove a thing.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.
This comment shows how geared to the spectator is our society.
Bullcrap. You added the words "Mexican immigrants" to the title.
A mother expecting her first baby is dead. She was hit by a truck driven by an alien without a DL, and without insurance.
He husband may not live.
The point here showing WHY it is dangerous to have an open border, and that the LIBERAL NEWS MEDIA will use any means possible to spin a story in favor of illegal aliens, even going as far as not saying who was driving.
If I remember correctly, isn't the liberal media one of the enemies?
I agree. This is just another mere coincidence
I added my son to my insurance last week. The underwriter called me up the next day and asked for the DL number.
Really? Here in Florida, there are are a TON of non-insured drivers, the majority of them "legals", and heck, alot of them are good, white-bred Americans..
Illegals come up in every thread it seems, I am waiting for someone to come up with the illegal alien/Terry Schiavo tie in..
I'm sorry about your brother, Flightdeck.
But the fact is that the other driver was drunk. His legality didn't cause the accident.
If they are here illegally, they deserve neither.
Where in the article does it say that illegal aliens were involved? How do you know they are Mexican? Maybe they are Cuban, Spanish... or, God forbid! AMERICAN!
But his illegality has caused massive bills for the citizen.
Translation no D/L or registration card.
Yes, it was a different story. I was just adding it to the thread.
The point is that the article by the LIBERAL NEWS MEDIA left out the pertinent facts which WERE REPORTED ON radio and TV in our local area.
But was he illegal?
My point is that tragic auto accidents happen every day. Jerks (from all backgrounds) drive around without insurance every day. Unless the driver was fleeing from the Border Patrol when he caused the accident, I cannot see why their nationality or legal status matters in the story.
You laid out this story to incite anger against Mexican immigrants without the article even mentioning the driver's race or legal status. Your motive is showing.
>>>I don't recall my insurance company ever asking for proof of my driver's license. Why would they care? Now many states will not give you a driver's license without proof of insurance.>>>
Of course your insurance company asked for your DRIVER INFORMATION. They base their eligibility/rates on your driving record. If you have no driver license, you have no record. No insurance company will insure an unlicensed driver.
If he's legal (or a citizen -- we do have millions of citizens with Mexican last names), do as is normally done. If he's illegal, ship him off to a Mexican hospital as soon as he can be safely moved.
The Birmingham news spins EVERYTHING in a positive manner towards illegals.
They wouldn't even report a TB breakout because it was traced to illegals.
Because there are LARGE numbers of illegal aliens with false drivers licences or no licence at all causing accidents, often fatal ones. (They aren't required to take a driving test when purchasing a false licence.)
Here on the California Central Coast, an illegal immigrant mecca, there are several accidents a day that are bad enough to make the evening news. Our insurance rates are higher. I have to drive super defensively--three days ago I had to pull over to the shoulder to avoid a Mexican passing in a no passing zone headed right at me. ETC.
Maybe his nationality is not mentioned, just like the nationality of the woman and her husband are not mentioned. Hey, what race were they?
And how can you say with certainty they aren't illegal aliens there are 10-20-million of the criminals who snuck into this country and can't read english, have no drivers licenses, and no insurance and run around our streets causing accidents, and if you ques that statement I know from experience because two of the illegal alien criminal bums caused a 7 car pileup of which I was hit!
Do you have more information than what's posted here? I haven't read who was at fault. How do you ~know~ it wasn't the woman or her husband?
Give me a frickin' break, Full Court.
We've got plenty of leeches in this country who are here legally. And they're sucking us just as dry.
You're grasping at straws now because I've pointed out what your motive is in posting this story.
And I still haven't seen a source stating he was illegal or even that he is Mexican. Just something you heard on the radio.
How do you know they aren't?
This is about a specific incident and they killed an American baby!
How do you know they aren't illegal?
Thanks for making some good points on this thread.
Hey sweetie, if you want take out your personal insecurities on someone, find another thread and another Freeper, 'cause I ain't the one.
It might not matter to you that our state has a huge problem on it's hands, but it matters to me.
I have to live here and drive the roads.
No one incites anger against legal Mexican immigrants.
But if YOU are on the side of law breakers and illegals, then I feel very sorry for you.
