What I understand is that all of the engines (motors, BTW are powered by electricity) have to have pushrod operated overhead valves. So, does the "Toyota" have to use an engine based on a Chevy smallblock like the Fords and Dodges?

That is my understanding, but the NASCAR spec also calls for a carbureted engine. I don't think any manufacturer has produced a vehicle with a carb for at least the last 10 years.

If anyone is up near Niagara Falls in the summer, on a Saturday night, (check the race date first) take a trip to Oswego and see the super modifieds race on the 5/8-mile banked oval. Bring ear plugs or ear protectors because it is like the sound of several top alcohol drag cars constantly for the night. It will wear you out just listening and watching. I my opinion, this is racing on four wheels and you can download a rule book (at least a few years ago one could).

Just in case you aren't familiar with this form of auto racing. The pictures say a thousand words. In a magazine article (too many popups and advertising for me to link however) the author reports that at Oswego the cars get around the oval in a little over 14 seconds at average speeds of 160 MPH. The G forces must be incredible. The author says it they are the fastest four wheeled machines in NA on a circuit. Since we have no NA based F1 program, she might be right.
