A stolen truck crammed with suspected illegal border crossers rolled over late Wednesday near Sonoita, [AZ] killing four people and injuring 21, authorities said.
A man driving another vehicle and suspected of involvement in the smuggling attempt was detained for questioning in the 11:45 p.m. crash about two miles north of the border, said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada.
"We haven't seen anything of this magnitude since I've been around," said Estrada, who has worked in area law enforcement for nearly 40 years.
"We are still trying to sort out what happened and who was responsible so they can be held accountable," he added.
Nine of the accident victims — one woman and eight men — had severe injuries and were flown to University Medical Center . One of the men died, and on Thursday, six of the injured were in critical condition and two in serious condition.
Estrada said the rest of the victims went to other hospitals, including Sierra Vista and Benson. Personnel there declined to give out information.
The sheriff said U.S. Border Patrol agents alerted his department to the accident, and turned over to police the man held near the accident scene.
Border Patrol spokesman Sean King said the car rolled over shortly after an agent spotted it traveling north on Elgin Road near Arizona 82 about 11:50 a.m.
A few minutes later, the agent reported that he saw a cloud of dust and came upon the crash, King said. "Looks like the driver lost control and rolled over."
There was no high-speed chase, King said, adding that it wasn't known whether the truck driver had seen the agent.
At a news conference Thursday, UMC head trauma surgeon John Porter said most of the patients were admitted with serious wounds, including to the head and the abdomen, consistent with being ejected. Most will be hospitalized for some time, he said. The hospital is working with the Mexican Consulate to notify patients' relatives.
Greg Pivirotto, the hospital's president and CEO, spoke about the strains that treating foreign nationals puts on hospital resources. UMC sees about 960 such patients a year, which means an annual loss to the hospital of about $5 million, he said.

There was a report I saw on TV from the hospital saying this accident took all of the E.R. doctors that Tucson has.
Just hope you dont have an accident at the same time one of these chattel truckloads do.
Whoa, that is really frightening. I wonder what happens to politicians who are in car accidents? They must have their own private emergency rooms because they sure don't seem concerned about what happens to the rest of us.
The one that really got me was the wreck in CO last week that killed 5 and left the driver seriously injured. They let a 15 year old kid drive the SUV at 4:30 AM and on a clear night with wide open view, he pulled right out in front of a train, and it got 'em. Could they honestly think that 15 year old kids are grown up? I know our culture is lots different than their's, but I personally don't know anyone who would allow their 15 year old unlicensed kid to drive on a little two lane highway, especially at night.

The one that still gets me happened last year in Sierra Vista - right by the Army base. An innocent elderly couple was killed and many other Americans injured by the illegals. Not that anyone in power cares or is listening.

BQ, they DON'T care!!! Americans are expendable!! If more of us die.........well, it's just too bad. Globalism is more important to them than our lives are.
I think the one on I-10 that sticks in my mind was the running gun battle between gangs trying to hijack illegals. Weren't there at least 4 shot dead? These things are only supposed to happen in the movies. America's going down, thanks to the globalist traitors!!
This makes me so angry! One of my sons just paid an E.R. bill for $800 bucks as "his share" after the insurance paid. The hospitals don't even bother asking the illegals if they have insurance, because they know they don't, and they know they'll skip on paying the bill, so they just bill the state. They're raping this state.
I was just hearing on the local conservative radio station how England has a 5 - 10 year wait for surgery. Even cancer surgery. And that 65% of the country is "on the dole" - and this is all due to "immigration." I had no idea it was that bad there since this never gets reported.
I don't know the exact stats, but my daughter-in-law lives in Toronto, Canada, and she describes a very similar situation. Canada is very socialist.
