Whew. Man, I may have to stop using Windows Update. It installs spyware!

Ditto on the linux, or a full-body-condom for your windoze box.
heh.....
Well for those who wish to use windows and still retain their freedom it is possible, but it requires ownership of two independent computers.
Keep one of them completely disconnected from the internet, running windows. There's nearly zero chance of getting viruses or spyware(including MS's new spyware) and there's no need to go through the daily chore of updates. Just use the computer.
I'm a fan of windows in this configuration. It actually works pretty well.
The second machine be a mac, or linux based.
It's almost guaranteed you'll have little headaches if you follow this.
Windows offered to let me download a tool yesterday from Windows Update to help me determine if my copy of Windows was valid, and if it wasn't they would tell me where I could buy a new one. I was miffed and didn't download it.
This article is a joke, right? The "spyware" mentioned is a tool MS released to validate that one is using a legal copy of Windows. You don't even have to install it if you don't want to, and if you do choose to install it you only get "pop-ups" if you're using an illegally obtained copy of Windows.
This has nothing to do with Windows vs. Mac (which you can't buy without the OS installed) or Linux (which is given away freely). This is just someone running a pirated copy of Windows and complaining that a tool that he let be installed was reminding him that he's running a pirated copy of Windows.
Agreed. I installed figuring that if it cripples my Windows because IT thinks I have a pirated copy then I'll have grounds for a great lawsuit...since all my copies of Windows are fully licensed and paid for.
Make sure it's a latux (laTUX, not laTEX) condom. :)
