USC investigating possible Jarrett NCAA violation

LOS ANGELES -- USC officials are investigating whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules, according to a published report Sunday.

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.

Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in Saturday's NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Los Angeles Times. Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported.

University compliance officials are looking into whether the football program received an unfair advantage. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

Even if they were paying the players, they wouldn't be able to afford $6000+ a month apartments.

And it would STILL be a rules violation for another person to make up the difference for it either way.

If true, this is a bigger issue than the one over Reggie Bush's family.

C'mon Mike,

These BS rules infractions are nothing more than an irrelevant organision flexing it's muscles.

The NCAA should go the way of the UN...into the history books.

Are you, by any chance, a USC fan?

Sure the Reggie Bush episode is a BS thing (I think) but this is a bit different.

And while I agree that the rules need to be edited/revamped whatever, they are still in effect and in reality they will be enforced so it's STUPID to violate them, isn't it?

this one probably holds more problems for USC than the Reggie Bush thing does.

At worst, they could be looking at a bigger investigation.

Probably what will happen is that Jarrett will have to repay the balance and he might have to sit a game or two.

This seems pretty ridiculous. The rules are pretty overbearing. Leinart's dad just wanted his son to live with one of his friends and teammates. Maybe Jarrett was a good influence on the irrepressable party-animal Leinart. This situation is a lot more innocuous than the Reggie Bush one, in my opinion.

No it isn't.

If Lienart's dad paid for Jarrett, that's about as cut and dried as it can get. If you were in an apartment with my son and you were both on the football team, I can't pay for you at all. I can pay for my own son, but not for you at all.

A similar story would be Troy Smith taking money to pay for one of Maurice Clarett's cell phones.

The Bush story is more convuluted.

I don't know about that.

Let's see what comes out of it first.

They are investigating it themselves. That's the way to get the NCAA on your side, as Ohio State's saga as shown us.

maybe...

which does make me believe that the rules need to be updated...but until that happens, the rules are the rules. Don't violate them and there won't be any issues.

I have my doubts

actually for the most part yes they have been.

Most of the players involved have either A) moved on or B) grown up and matured.

And it does help that the coaching staffs are not paying players anymore (like Jim O'Brien and Paul Biancardi were).

7 of the 9 violations at Ohio State didn't involve players anyway, but coaches. The 8th one was a dentist who was giving the horses ERRR the players on the Women's basketball team free dental work and the 9th was the cell phone money given to Troy Smith by a booster for Maurice Clarett's cell phone bill.

Troy Smith has grown up (had he been the starting QB against Texas, things may have been different) and Clarett is GONE.

They've been under the microscope in Columbus and that town, despite the Blue Jackets in the NHL, is still a one-team town.

Now watch, since I've gone and said all that, someone will do something stupid.

Though to be fair, this seems like a nitpicky unintentional violation. Leinart's dad put him in an apartment complex with security to avoid fan harassment, and allowed his roomate to move in, too. If he didn't the roomate could have been stuck without someone to pay the other half of the rent at the old place (and all the harassment.)

The NCAA shouldn't make a big deal out of this. OTOH, the Bush family saga stinks to high heaven.
