Whenever I read news about dog meats, I'm constantly reminded of news articles in Asia that say "eating dog meat is our culture. Banning it is the frontline of Western cultural imperialism!"

I remember an article in a 1970s issue magazine by a then very elderly author, which contained a reference to dogs and Chinese people. He wrote bitterly that while the Europeans (yangren, or whites in Mandarin Chinese) treated dogs as pets and not allowing Chinese to eat them, in Shanghai during the Treaty-port era there was a big sign at the main park in the international leased sector (in practice run by the British) that sated "No entry for Chinese and dogs." meaning they (the whites) regarded Chinese as like dogs. Not that I agree with that author, who lived through the nastiest episodes of Western imperialism bully in China that lasted until WWII, but his thoughts correspond to the average Chinese of my great-grandfather's generation about differences in attitudes towards dogs among Chinese and Westerners, and Western attitudes towards Chinese back then being no different from their attitudes towards dogs. His bitterness, given the context of the time, is understandable. IMHO the era of eating dogs is now long gone, and I wouldn't eat them myself. In Chinese circles today, anyone who still want to dogs are probably over 65 by now.
