The Class of 2006..graduation I attended today.(Vanity)

My daughter-in-law graduated with honors this morning from UCF School of Education.

All in all- it was a nice morning- the ceremonies ran smoothly, the speeches were mercifully brief- yet full of hope and encouragement.

As I stood up for the "goodbye and thank-you all for coming"...I kept waiting for something. And waiting. Until the ceremony was complete, I couldn't put my finger on WHAT was wrong- why I felt uneasy. Then it hit me. I was in an American university- at commencement- and not ONE person had said a prayer for the Class of 2006. No convocation, no invocation. No one reminding these young people there is a power they can always turn to- regardless of the origin of their faith. No one saw fit to ask that power to bless these young men and women in their teaching careers.

It was at THAT moment I truly grasped how far political correctness has woven itself into our culture.

I don't know if this topic even arose as the faculty planned for commencement this year. If even one faculty member thought to ask "Who will we ask to deliver the prayer"? I hope so. I hope there was a knock-down-drag-out heated discussion. I hope at least someone in charge of teaching our young men and women gave just a passing thought to the idea of a prayer.

As I walked back to the parking lot, I said a prayer for this Class of 2006.

It seemed no one else would.

It's a public university; of course they aren't going to say a prayer there (as well they shouldn't).

I decided to post a vanity. It seemed important.

You have no idea of where you have come from, nor where you are heading.

Why are you here?

Invocations and/or convocations have always been part of graduation ceremonies.

I hope you have your flame-proof suit on. You're gonna need it.

Of COURSE they aren't going to say a prayer there?

Why ever not? I've attended many graduations over the years- PUBLIC high schools- private and public univerisities- junior colleges and so on. This was the first one in all those years- in various kinds of schools where there was no blessing asked for the students.

(as well they shouldn't).

Why not?

I read recently in the book Young Patriots that Ben Franklin recommended at one point that they beseech the Almighty for a little guidance in drafting the Constitution.

His suggestion was out-voted and now we've got an income tax, a nanny state, a Supreme Court that looks to foreign law for nifty ideas, career politicians a federal school board and the list goes on and on and on. And the things that they specifically said Congress should not do Congress now does all the time.

I'm sure you see my point.

Thanks for your report, SE Mom.

I bought Michael Savage's book for one dollar at The Dollar Store and I know he's half nuts. But he's also the one person in this country who lays out what is happening in this country. Seeing it all put together in one book like that is shocking. And very, very worrisome.

He talks about how religion has been taken out of all facets of our lives and you've given us just one more place where the left has been effective in diminishing what was once important in this country.

I was surprised by my reaction, I rarely enter into state vs religion discussions, and I'm not one to blast anyone for their beliefs, or lack of them. Yet this omission on the part of the faculty was startling to me...and I left feeling a little empty.

The tyranny of the minority won another one.

Well, they don't realize what damage is being done to those students by not having a prayer for the graduating class. Even if they don't have a clue and could care less, God will still bless the young ones...
