Flutie retires after 21 years of pro football

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (May 15, 2006) -- Doug Flutie retired from pro football, ending a 21-year career in which the Heisman Trophy winner puzzled both opposing defenses and his own coaches with his unconventional style at quarterback.
The decision by the 43-year-old Flutie was announced by the New England Patriots, for whom he played five games last season.
Flutie spent 12 seasons in the NFL and also played in the USFL and the Canadian Football League. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award six times and the league's Grey Cup championship three times.
Flutie finishes with 14,715 passing yards and 86 touchdowns in the NFL, spending most of his time as a backup. Last season, he attempted just 10 passes and converted the league's first drop kick for an extra point since the 1941 NFL title game.

PS If anybody hears of a highlight program on Flutie's career, likely to air sometime now that he's retired, be sure to ping the NFL list. That's gotta be one heck of a highlight reel.

Good Luck Doug Flutie! While never a superstar, he certainly made the most of his talent. IMHO, he deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame. He's perhaps the most successful CFL player ever, and let's face it, it is called the "Pro Football Hall of Fame" - not the NFL Hall of Fame.

BC-Miami in '84 is still one of the greatest football games I've ever seen(NFL, college, or high school), and not just because of the last-second Hail Mary he threw to Gerald Phelan. That, and Mike Ditka about to rip his head off on the sidelines during a Bears game will always be my two most memorable Doug Flutie moments.

I could never stand Doug Flutie because of his Rat politics. He was always an okay backup, but not starter material and certainly not Hall of Fame material.

Despite his rat politics, I liked him because he was sort of like "rudy", not the best but really reminded me of the old school football of the 50s and 60s that I never saw .
He never really had a flash about him. He was three yards and a pile of dust kind of guy.

oh yeah....
This guy would have been remembered as a good to great college QB WITHOUT the play against Miami that won him the Heisman.
I just wonder what would have happened had he stayed in the NFL instead of going to the CFL when his contract was us with New England.
