Polk paints different picture of oldest son

MARTINEZ - Susan Polk's oldest son, who has testified against her in her murder trial, initially believed that she attacked her husband in self-defense, the defendant testified today on her third day on the stand.

Polk, 48, sought to portray a different perspective of Adam Polk from what he told the jury himself. Adam Polk, a UCLA student studying philosophy and English, testified that his mother was "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" and "a sick, sick person who's in dire need of being in a very controlled environment for a very long time."

Susan Polk, who is defending herself against charges that she killed her psychotherapist husband, Felix Polk, 70, in October 2002 at their Orinda home, wept today and said her son has "two sides." One "could be so foul-mouthed" and the other "could be just very loving," she said.

"He had a habit of telling me absolutely everything," she said.

Polk maintains her husband was abusive and that she stabbed him to death in self-defense. After she was arrested, she said, Adam Polk asked her, "How could you have stabbed Dad 27 times?"

The reference was to the number of wounds outlined in the Contra Costa County medical examiner's death certificate, which in turn was based on an autopsy report.

Polk said that in fact, she had stabbed her husband five or six times. "I said, 'I didn't do it. I didn't stab him 27 times.' "

She added that she had told her son, " 'They might as well take me out and shoot me. I'm being framed.' "

When she told her son she had stabbed Felix Polk five times, she said, Adam Polk told her, " 'Mom, that's not murder. That's self-defense.' "

Well, the young man has a way with words.
