Mozilla Launches Next Firefox 2.0 Alpha
GOVERNMENT ENTERPRISE ^ | May 30, 2006 | Gregg Keizer

Mozilla Corp. on Saturday released the third alpha version of Firefox 2.0, code-named "Bon Echo," with additions that include a built-in anti-phishing feature and suggestions for searches run in Google and Yahoo. The anti-phishing feature in Firefox is courtesy of Google, which released the code for a Firefox extension, or plug-in, to the Mozilla Foundation for use in the browser.

As with the two earlier alphas, Mozilla stressed that the early look was intended for "Web application developers and our testing community" only.

"Current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.x should not use Bon Echo Alpha 3," the company added in the release notes to the new version.

The first beta, however, is scheduled to ship in June, Mozilla said in an updated roadmap posted to its site. The final release of Firefox 2 will land in August, according to that schedule, ahead of the third quarter target once mentioned.

The up tick in development may be due to dropping Places, a searchable history and bookmark feature that had been touted as one of Firefox 2.0's most notable additions. A month ago Mozilla yanked the feature , saying then that it needed to go if Firefox 2.0 was to meet its release deadline.

Bon Echo Alpha 3 can be downloaded from the Mozilla site in editions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

I need some technical education and cannot find an answer on the internet. Could anybody help me out?

I have an old version of Firefox and don't know how to upgrade it. I want to install either a new version of Firefox or Mozilla but before download the new one I have to delete the old version and this would leave me without a browser. IE is inactivated in the background and I have no intension to reactivate it because in no time the bugs and viruses will invade all my system. So my question is how can I install a browser without another functioning browser?

Thanks for any help.

Firefox 1.5 was a piece of crap with memory leaks galore.

I sure hope 2.0 isn't another hunk of junk.

Depends on which version you're using.

If you're using 1.0.x, simply go to Mozilla's page, download the new version to your desktop, uninstall the current version, then install the new version.

If you're using 1.5.x.x, just go to Help -> Check for Updates.

Those memory leaks were in all prior versions; some were actually fixed in 1.5, more fixed in 1.5.0.2. 2.x will have more fixes, but 3.x is where nearly everything has been eradicated.

Why do you have to delete the old version before you download the new one?

Also, I think Firefox should update itself in the Options dialog. How old is your current version?

I've updated my FF before and have found it leaves the old version in place, and adds the new version. I've always removed my current version before upgrading because of this.

I don't doubt it. But he said he had to delete the old version before downloading the new one. I don't understand that.

I think you can get an actual CD in the mail....

If so, then after acquiring the CD , you would uninstall the old and then install the new./

I want to install either a new version of Firefox or Mozilla but before download the new one I have to delete the old version and this would leave me without a browser.

You have several options.

1.) Download and install Opera, and use it in the interim.

2.) Download SeaMonkey.   I prefer the ZIP distribution, which can be downloaded from any Mozilla Mirror

3.) Using archive/compression software such as WinZip, WinRAR, etc., archive your current Firefox install directory (usually Program Files > Mozilla Firefox). Extract the archive to another directory on your HD, such as C:\Temp, then proceed with the un-installation of Firefox.

1) Download the new Firefox to your computer.
2) Uninstall the old Firefox.
3) Double click and install the new Firefox.

Voila.

I guess it depends on how long you want to tie up your phone line. :) FF is around 18 MB. It's doable, but you may want to just start it DL'ing before you go to bed and let it run all night.

Yeah, it is. FF is up to 1.5.0.3 now.

i believe that you may have been just a wee dyslexic on the numbers Shadow Ace. Firefox is actually an 8.1-8.2 MB download.

Ncpatriot, you may wish to consider purchasing an external 56K call waiting modem. i use one of those when i'm running Windows. All that is required is Call Waiting and caller ID from your local telephone service. Install the software that comes with the modem, and you will get a pop-up when you have an incoming call. You have the option of taking the call, or contiuning to surf. i don't know what setup you are running of course, but i used one of those modems on a Celleron II machine running Windows ME. It worked just fine.

Argh. Yeah, you're right. 8.1 is MUCH better than 18, though. :)

Ahem, perhaps you could download the new install exe BEFORE uninstalling your present version of Firefox?

Actually I think FF will update itselft in place.
