The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks... Well, do to a little work problem on my part, the ride's been moved back a little - to early afternoon, we've got all day, no hurry :~)

...There is a fairly new product called Re-Covr that I may ask my vet about...

Hmmmm, this one sppears to be an injection, which would be good if they're stung by something and have a reaction, but I don't think I'd wanna have to give a shot all the time. I also couldn't find any information about the dosage, like how often you'd have to give it and how much. Let me know what you find out from your vet.

So then I take it , it's not hot there....

It's very humid here today. I'm hoping to start lunging Harley again today, probably be this evening when the arena is in the shade. Too hot now, for both of us.

Becky

No - it's not hot... it's half sun, half cloudy, currently 57 but will probably reach 70. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was May.

I don't want to give daily injections either but surely there's a way to administer it orally. I'll find out and let you know....

Tuffy is really starting to itch now. If he was out on pasture with trees and fence posts, he'd be scratching himself bloody. He's in a round pen (no sharp edges), covered with a sheet, fly mask and tons of fly spray during the night and in a stall during the day. His face is sunburning so bad that I'm keeping him up during the day.

A high of 70 in June???? I'm moving...

It's so hot and humid today that you can barely breathe outside. High today about 98 but with the humidity it makes it feel like 105 or so.

Boy, that's bad. Hopefully you can find something that'll get him some relief without messing him up some other way.

I have hopes for the Tri-Hist granules. I just top-dress a tablespoon full of it over her feed once a day. It's supposed to last 12 hours and you can give it twice a day, but I can only get out there in the evenings. She doesn't like it much, but she will eat it, just over plain oats, which is all I'm feeding these days. I got it from the vet and it was about $40 for about a quart-sized plastic jar full.

I tell ya, we may get a lot of rain and days to complain about, but when it's nice here, it couldn't be nicer :~)

I tried a product called Hist-All, it has one of the same indredients as the Tri-Hist but doesn't have the pseudoephedrine. Let me know if it works for you. The Hist-All worked on Tuffy's cough but didn't put a dent in the itching.

We have more crappy days here than nice days. It's funny when you see people driving around in convertibles when there are maybe 5 days out of the entire year that are nice enough for that. Can you imagine sitting in a convertible, stuck in traffic, in 100 degree humid heat?

The fall is the best time of year, late October and early November. In my opinion, that's when the climate is the most comfortable. Spring is nice, too, but it's too humid.

Just read this on the internet:

Torrential Rains Flood Texas, Louisiana Highways Shut Down, Nursing Home Evacuated HOUSTON (June 19) - Texas' governor sent National Guard troops to Houston Monday as torrential rainfall flooded homes and highways in eastern Texas and parts of Louisiana, where more than 100 patients had to be evacuated from a nursing home. As much as 10.5 inches of rain was reported in the Houston area by the height of the morning rush hour, said Rusty Cornelius, administrative coordinator for Harris County Emergency Management. Almost 6 inches of rain fell in just 75 minutes near Hobby Airport, the National Weather Service reported. Gov. Rick Perry ordered the Texas Army National Guard to send trucks, helicopters, swift water rescue teams and an incident management team to the flooded area.

Heh... I've experienced the same thing when I spent a couple summers in Phoenix. Course, it's a dry heat, but it's still dang hot. I came back without a tan, and everyone here said "How come you're so white? I thought you'd have a dark tan?" I said "You can't go outside during the daytime! Especially to sit in the sun!"

Good grief, I wish they would send that rain up this way. We had storms all around us Saturday night, frog stranglers, and we barely got a drop.

Same here, we have not had rain since May 21st! It is very, very dry and it is slim pickens in the pasture.

I dated a fella that lived in Santa Barbara and he came down once for a summer visit. All of his buddies in CA kept telling him that he was gonna burn up in the heat. His problem was air conditioning, he was always cold in restaurants, etc. because we Texans typically keep the a/c and fans turned way up.

By the way, Phoenix in summer is brutal, dry heat or not.

Heh... Any temps above 90 are hot, no matter what the humidity.

Are you in Texas?

No Central Alabama. I drove 15 1/2 hours home from Norther MI yesterday in the pouring rain. I got 30 minutes from the house and it stopped.
