Bob Dylan in Baseball Hall of Fame
A baseball-themed episode of Bob Dylan's
weekly show on XM radio has been added to the archives.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (June 28) - Bob Dylan has played at historic Doubleday Field - music, that is. Now, he's back, and for good, just a block down Main Street in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The museum has added the baseball episode from the famed singer-songwriter's weekly music show, "Theme Time Radio Hour," on XM Satellite Radio to its archive, it was announced Wednesday.
The one-hour episode contains Dylan singing an a cappella rendition of "Take Me out to the Ball Game," along with classic baseball-announcing calls, such as Curt Gowdy's description of Ted Williams' home run in his final at-bat with the Boston Red Sox.
It also contains several original baseball compositions, including Buddy Johnson's "Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?" and "The Ball Game" by Sister Wynona Carr.
The CD will be added to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library archive, which features more than 10,000 hours of recorded audio and video, and will be available for researchers.
I went to Cooperstown about 20 years ago. Neat place.
I enjoyed the NY State Farm Museum as much as the BBHoF. I didn't even know it was there. And I didn't know that the Cardiff Giant was on display there either.
Did he sing "Idiot Wind" in honor of Bud Selig?
There's been a large renovation and you owe it to yourself to get back there if you can!
BTW, the song "Life Is A Ball Game" (available on Rhino's "Baseball's Greatest Hits Vol. 1") is hilarious, mixing baseball and religious references with Satan as the opposing pitcher trying to strike you out and finishes with St. John coming on in the Ninth Inning as your closer. Not sure the analogies all work but it's truly a baseball classic.
That song and the "Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" (on the same CD) by Steve Goodman are all-time keepers.
Right on!
And Dylan belongs in every Hall of Fame there is. He's one of the 10 most influential entertainers of the 20th Century.
I can't even think of 10 other people who might be on the list.
The 10 Most Influential Entertainers of the 20th Century...
In no particular order
Bing Crosby
Bob Hope
Marilyn Monroe
Irving Berlin -- not an entertainer per se, but wrote some dynamite stuff.
Bob Dylan.
Anyone else?
I DO know cole porter's name, and am aware of some of his work -- The movie Kiss Me Kate -- that was his stuff, right? But influential?
Convince me.
