Medina- Something was odd about the letter a Medina girl got in the mail so her mother opened it and discovered it was an amorous note from the 12-year-old girl's school bus driver.
The letter contained Michael Eddy's e-mail address and an invitation to contact him. The girl's mother shared the invitation with city police, who set up an Internet account and began chatting with Eddy, 33, of Rittman.
On Monday, after hearing the story, Medina Common Pleas Judge James Kimbler sentenced Eddy to 15 months in prison for importuning. Eddy has been in jail since his arrest almost eight months ago.
Court files show that Eddy wanted to have sex with the girl and expressed surprise that she was friendly in her e-mails but ignored him on the bus. Still, he arranged a late-night meeting last November in a parking lot near her home. That's where he was arrested.
After his arrest, Eddy told of sexual encounters with two girls under the age of 13 in Wayne County, Assistant County Prosecutor Matthew Razavi said. Authorities there are investigating.
Defense attorney Walter Madison of Akron said Eddy functions at a seventh-grade level and thought a confession would keep him out of jail. Madison urged counseling for Eddy.
"He has no rhyme or reason for engaging in such conduct. Without any insight into why he does this, the community will be no better off in [15] months than it is now," Madison said.
Eddy apologized to the family in court.
Kimbler labeled Eddy a sexually oriented offender. He will have to register with the county sheriff annually for the next 10 years.
