He only had the plane there on static display and was flying home to Santa Monica.

He lost the engine in a single engine jet.

He was a very competant pilot and instructor plus owning many very expensive war birds and ran the museum at Santa Monica which is quite impressive.

At least the large fees that he earned were put back into avaition for not only his enjoyment but that of a lot of people.

As far as that aircraft, he was the only certified instructor for it.

He also raced an unlimited class bird in the Reno Air Races.

He was not doing stunts over neighborhoods. He had just taken off, was having engine trouble, tried to circle around back to the airport, realized he could not make it and headed for a field away from any houses. Unfortunately he did not quit make it. He hit a house just before the field. Three houses damaged in total. The house he hit pretty much gone, the other two have fire damage. No one on the ground hurt. So I have to give the guy some credit. He probably could have bailed but then his plane could have hit in the middle of the neighborhood.

On a side note, a couple of Girl Scouts had just left the house since nobody was home to answer the door. Very Lucky.
