LOL, well first off, Solaris just recently got on the OSS bandwagon. Secondly, I used Solaris at work on several key machines, had a Sparc 10 sitting on my desk. I've used it. I also found it to be a little bloated and I wanted to try something else.

BSD, is not as polished on the DT level. Now I worked with a guy at the labs back in the late 90's that did work on some of the BSD kernel. And he was a damn good programmer, the type with a hyperactive metabolism, who built pyramids from his empty DietCoke/TAB (he didn't need the sugar) cans in his office and I'm sure his, and his collegue's code is solid. And the security is at the top of the heap.

But I wanted to try out this Linux thing. I liked it, and I 've stayed with it. And now I'm supporting an American Company (Novell) that's doing it's own distro SuSE.

Not true at all, nothing gets into the kernel without his direct blessing, and there is no discussion of a fork whatsoever.

HAHAHA. Of course there is no discussion of a fork you dork. If someone wants to fork, they fork. There are several major forks out there that happened because of differences of opinion with Linus over various issues. Sometimes it's a filesystem that Linus isn't ready to accept yet, to someone forks off for a bit while the experimental filesystem, subsystem or whatever proves itself. Later, if the software proves itself and doesn't conflict with anything existing in the kernel, it might well be folded back into the official tree.

This development style seems to work really well, and is one of the great strengths of Linux. People have the freedom to do what they want to do to prove their ideas out. There is no management layer there saying "no. you can't do that, do this instead." After a while and more discussion, and the concept has actually proven itself in the field, an idea that in many heirarchical organizations that would have had to be abandoned instead are accepted and made available to the general public. To me this rocks. It is also one reason why Linux supports adfs, affs, autofs, cifs, coda, coherent, cramfs,  debugfs, devpts, efs, ext, ext2, ext3, hfs, hpfs, iso9660, jfs, minix, msdos, ncpfs, nfs, nfs4, ntfs, proc,  qnx4, ramfs, reiserfs, romfs, smbfs, sysv, tmpfs, udf,  ufs,  umsdos,  usbfs,  vfat,  xenix,  xfs,  and xiafs filesystems, while MS-Windows supports FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. The above list doesn't even include many filesystems considered 'experimental' that you can use if you choose.

Your single-minded protectionism just makes you look silly, especially when you continue to proclaim things "foreign", despite volumes of evidence offered to the contrary.

If you weren't such a wackjob on the subject, you'd probably find more agreement here. Like many here, I do what I can to buy American when I can, though the definition of what is "American" is a little bit more complex than your MS-like single-threaded thought processes can apparently concieve of.

I don't have to look at anything, I already know most BSD users use KDE, and generally use Stallmanware as little as possible. The main thing they need is a replacement for gcc, and they are working on it. Stallman is a radical no matter how much you like to defend him, thankfully you're quickly becomming a minority, everywhere.

Linux is still foreign software, obviously. Novell is just selling it, like a toyota dealer here in the states that puts their own mudflaps and bug screens on while it's in the lot.

Oh I'm sure you'd win that, since most freepers outside your gang of fanatics avoid these threads like the plague.

LOL

I'm surprised we haven't seen that one yet in this thread from GE.

They're all out to get him. Specifically.

"Obviously, he was agreeing with me that Americans have basically no choice in some markets such as TV's but to buy foreign products..."

Um, no. Read his last post to you again:

"I am eager to have a discussion about different viewpoints.

But since your view is already correct and superior to all, you have no need for my miniscule commentary. Your arguments are on all points correct, coming from an omniscient point of view, and I apologize for offering any alternative. You own the thread.

Turn the light off when you leave."

You were clearly nailed here, and you missed it, because your response was:

"You're right, I don't leave wiggle room, in a straightforward discussion. Thanks for being honest, and not resorting to name calling and insults like those from others."

Little did you know, he'd just insulted you in the previous post.

"You'll probably even throw a party if all US car manufacturers get bought out by foreign companies, like Chrysler already has been."

Um, no again. I am not happy with Chrysler being bought out by Daimler, especially because it ruined the Jeep line (IFS on the Liberty and Grand Cherokee, and the Compass. 'Nuff said), of which I was once very fond. Now, Jeeps are crap, with the exception of the Wrangler. And they're definitely not American. I won't buy a watered down Sissy Utility Vehicle.

You obviously know little about how to truly insult. Because it doesn't take little names, or little games, like you boys play. It takes facts, cold hard ones, something you have no concept of whatsoever. But else your words mean nothing.

I don't have a problem with that other poster, he seems like a pretty reasonable guy, but watching you constantly ping him to come help you is hilarious. Fend for yourself for once, without names and games and cries for help. FLAMING DEATH, LOL.

Sheesh!

So the Toyota dealer selling a Toyota that was built in the USA is only adding American value by adding mudflaps and bug screens?

And I guess the new Honda plant that Honda USA is going to build here in Indiana is still going to produce "foreign" cars? Funny, I think Indiana is shaping up to be the largest producers of "foreign" cars in the country. Want to know something else that's funny: The last time I checked Indiana was in the USA.

And no American engineers are working on Linux right. And Novell is not making any money by selling eDirectory/Zenworks that runs on Winders/Unix/Linux/OSX. And I guess it's not in their corporate self interest to sell and promote SuSE Linux, a distro they OWN, as a platform for their other proprietary software?

Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome.

An American trait. Just ask the USMC.

It's completely blasphemous to compare a foreign fake like Linux to the USMC, point blank. US companies like Apple and Sun are who's adapting and overcoming pal.

You know something, you're an idiot. Sorry Pal.

And for the record, I was talking about Novell - Improvising adpating and overcoming. (you really need to work on your reading and comprehension skills)

And I'll tell you something else Pal - you do more damage to you and your cause than any of us so-called Linux (or non M$ OS) cheerleaders (combined) could ever hope to do.

If I were Mr. Gates; I'd pull you off this duty and send you to some dusty back room with no internet access for a while.

"You obviously know little about how to truly insult."

Fine with me. If you want to be known as the Insult King, knock yourself out.

"Because it doesn't take little names, or little games, like you boys play."

He didn't call you names or play games. He just nailed you with biting sarcasm, which isn't difficult to do when you paint a target on your own chest by being an ass. And you missed it. Any reasonable person, however, could have seen it.

"It takes facts, cold hard ones, something you have no concept of whatsoever. But else your words mean nothing."

So then, the Lie List IS effective, despite your protests to the contrary. Thanks. I thought so.

"I don't have a problem with that other poster, he seems like a pretty reasonable guy, but watching you constantly ping him to come help you is hilarious. Fend for yourself for once, without names and games and cries for help. FLAMING DEATH, LOL."

You probably don't have a problem with him because you fail to comprehend when you've been nailed. I've seen the lack of comprehension in action, like when someone posted a parody critique of Linux and you said (paraphrasing) that the author was a patriotic American like yourself. When you can't comprehend insults, everyone's your friend.

And FYI, I pinged sam_paine because that's what you're supposed to do on FR when you mention someone in a thread where they are not present. It's called a "courtesy ping", a concept that has curiously escaped you in your time here since, what was it, 1996? Of course, what with the number of times you've been ejected from this forum, I wouldn't expect a concept such as "courtesy" to cross the mind of a crass and unrefined person such as yourself.

Have a good night.

Dream on. The sooner people learn the truth about guys like Stallman, the better. And he and his disciples are being further exposed as the kooks they are every day.
