Stupid Computer question (Vanity)

Posted on 08/15/2006 4:00:05 PM PDT by jsh3180

I recewntly set up a linksys wireless router in the house for my wife's laptop. I am trying to figure if one can print to the printer wirelessly, without hooking up the USB printer cable from the wireless laptop to the printer.

The printer is an HP PSC 2355 All in one.

Appreciate any help you can give to this computer hardware dolt.

Thanks in advance.

Your router may have a Prtinter output. If not look into a wireless Print Server. Check Tiger Direct.

I know you can do it, because mine is set up that way. After hours of frustration trying to do it myself, I finally had some kid set it up for me, lol. Just to show you how ignorant I am about how it works, I thought you hooked up the printer cable to the router?? Okay, I'll shut up now.

Question: Is the printer plugged into any other computer?

Assuming that the answer is no, you can get a wireless print server and plug the printer into that. In my case, I have a HP Laserjet 2600N which is hooked up to my wireless router.

However, most of the features of the AOI system will generally not work with a wireless print server. You'd have to directly plug in to use the scanner for example.

Is the printer hooked to a wired PC? If so, you can share the printer on the wired PC and connect that way. If not, but the printer has a cat5 jack, it can be plugged into the the router as long as the internal printserver is configured for DHCP (most are by default). If none of the above, you will need a wireless print server with USB port for the printer.

It sounds like you need a wireless print server for your printer.

I doubt it came with wireless built-in, but it is something you can purchase. Linksys and others make such devices for just this need.

The printer in question is not hooked to any other computer, she uses it only for her wireless laptop, she'd ;love to be able to have the printer across the room and be able to send to the printer while she's doing work with the wireless on the couch or in the bed

You need a wireless print server.

An example:

I'm on Apple, so I don't know if this will help, but: If there's a USB port on the router, you might be able to hook it directly into the wireless router. At least that's how it works with Apple. Basically plug the printer into the Airport USB port, turn it on, and do a search for new printers. I'd bet there's a way to do it with the wireless router on a PC also, but you might have to buy a wireless printer router. If you have a knowledgeable computer place close by, maybe they could help you. Here are a couple of links I found to wireless print servers:

Hope this helps, but I'd definitely touch base with someone about compatibility, first.

If you are XP, go to the printer Icon. Right click onit and select SHARE printer.

The printer the computer is hooked to must be powered on and you can also in Network create a network connection to it.

It is really simple with XP.

Anything you pretty much want to do can be done as long as you are willing to pay for all the add on goodies you need.

I know it can be done because my daughter can print through the router from her laptop upstairs to the printer connected to the desktop downstairs. Many times the printer will suddenly start spitting out documents while I'm working beside it and it wasn't me that ordered them. My daughter hooked it up. She's my in-house computer guru. She's always telling me to leave my printer on, even if I turn off the computer. At least teenagers have some use lately.

Forgot to add, her laptop is a Gateway and the printer is an HP Officejet 7310 All-in-One, if that makes a difference.
