Granted, I don't think it holds much water either, but it is worth considering.
It has been reported time and time again that if your car is damaged during the race, NASCAR will generally overlook any deviations from the rules made to that area of the car. You can decrease your aero drag, and all sorts of things with the strategic use of tape repair.
Additionally only a fool would put it past Chad Knauss to not try something like this.
Where I think the theory loses all credibility is the idea that a team and driver are going to risk the other damage to the front end that a hit in the wall is going to do.
I read he is going to one of the Toyota teams and probably not Red Bull, that leaves two possibilities.
