Former NFL star rips Gumbel
Sports Illustrated ^

In a scathing rebuke of Bryant Gumbel's recent comments on HBO's Real Sports last week that NFLPA head Gene Upshaw is a "personal pet" of outgoing NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, former Minnesota Vikings running back and longtime player rep Robert Smith accused the TV host of both desperation and jealousy.

"To me, this is Gumbel's Dan Rather-type mistake. He's someone who has been around for a while and has some credibility, but who wants to believe a certain perception. I believe part of it with Gumbel is that Gene is a much more powerful black man than he is. And he's jealous of Gene's power and position. I think Gumbel's even jealous of where his former [NBC's Today] co-host Katie Couric is, and how she's moved on to a more powerful position and he still hasn't.''

Smith talks like a FReeper!

Bryant Gumball is an intolerably and excessively arrogant liberal broadcaster, and as a result, he doesn't have much audience charisma.

And what does the moron say about the summer Olympics. Would he object to white people lamenting that it's not representative because there are so many black athletes in track and field?

Too many blacks in boxing? Too many blacks playing basketball?

The man is a jealous petty buffoon.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the same Robert Smith who was a star at Ohio State and seriously considered med school instead of the NFL. I believe he left pro football because he'd had enough of it and knew there was more he could do with his life.

IOW, he's no idiot.

Many people consider medical school and don't get in. Considering is not doing. I'm not impressed with "considering" because I did it and finished it. This guy is a decent guy who never completed a full season in the NFL due to injuries. He's bright but he's also a sour grapes kind of person. That's why he's always been 0.4 FTE.

(AP) — The job status of Bryant Gumbel, scheduled to be the play-by-play broadcaster on the eight late-season games on the NFL’s in-house network, could be the subject of a discussion by NFL officials after Gumbel’s suggestion that Paul Tagliabue show his successor ‘‘where he keeps Gene Upshaw’s leash.’’

Tagliabue said Monday that incoming commissioner Roger Goodell and Steve Bornstein, who runs the NFL Network, will discuss the remarks after Goodell takes office Sept. 1.

Gumbel has been garbage from the first. Nothing has changed. Put him in power positions and you create more garbage.

During coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel he made the following remarks,

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."[1]

There is also a "paucity of blacks" in Gumble's taste in women.

One season iron man, just like Joe Namath. One hit wonder. He is a nice man, an articulate man, but a sour grapes guy. One season, BFD.
