Antique help needed...

Posted on 08/24/2006 10:24:24 PM PDT by Number57

Need help identifying this cabinet I found last year next to my apt's dumpster (heck yeah I grabbed it). My first guess was a liquor cabinet. Will take more pics if I need to, but I can say that I haven't found any kind of identifying label or tag:

The circular templates are for six of something of three different sizes. Glasses for a place setting for six maybe?

*guessing*

I thought it was nice... as you can see in the pics, I haven't touched a thing, as far as trying to fix it up.

I have no idea what a canarble cabinet is, honestly, so I dunno... lol

It's way cool!

As to "Canarble," here's the story, and probably a radio show you should listen to after Rush! :-)

You WILL enjoy. Hannity and Medved are okay, but the Roe Conn folks are by far the most fun to listen to in the afternoon. My workday just whistles by!

It looks very similar to something that would hold telescope eyepieces. Telescope eyepieces commonly come in three barrel sizes, .965 inch, 1.25 inch and 2 inch. Your round holes are much too big, but that was all I could come up with. :)

You think this was a specialized cabinet? It even crossed my mind that it might be a sewing cabinet.

Doesn't make sense for a liquor cabinet, unless it was for show only. The top would close onto the tops of the bottles.

..I can't figure this thing out.

It looks like something you would find in a doctors office. Holders for containers, cotton balls, tongue depressors????

I'm no expert (when has that ever stopped anyone around here from dispensing their $0.02?), but yeah -- that definitely looks like it could be a smallish liquor cabinet, where hiball glasses were stored/drinks mixed on top, and the bottles stored on the bottom.

Looks like there's a circular liquid stain or two from a bottle on the bottom shelf:

Compare its basic form against this "Vintage Japanese Liquor Bar Cabinet" or even this antique Chinese liquor cabinet in black lacquer.

As to price, here are some current eBay auctions
