Firefox bookmarks wiped out again (Vanity question to computer-savvy Freepers)

Posted on 09/22/2006 2:13:01 PM PDT by DaveLoneRanger

Almost two months ago, I wrote a vanity entitled Question about Firefox browser; bookmarks and saved sites all gone?

Almost two months later, the exact problem repeats itself.

I'd found a solution two months ago, which I detailed in comment 40 of the above link.

NOW, that solution won't work.

Let me start from the beginning.

Last night, I updated my virus protection system (Norton Antivirus) and the computer insisted I restart so it could implement said updates.

I shut 'er down, just like in the above-mentioned thread. I reboot this morning, and discover that all my bookmarks, placemarkers, saved tabs and RSS feeds are obliterated.

"Aha," I thought, I know the solution to this. I'll just go into that folder I did before and get them back in no time.

However, the saved bookmarks are from JULY. In other words, the bookmarks have not been backed up since I first had the problem and posted about it two months ago. You'd think I'd have learned and backed up my bookmarks since then, but I'd been given a false sense of security by the supposed wonder of Firefox bookmark backup.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If no suggestions, then I'm sure you have wisecracks. (After all, YOUR bookmarks are safe and sound...you think...)

Also take my advice. Back up your freaking bookmarks. *Growls*

P.S. The strange thing is, my saved forms still exist. For example, if I begin to type a letter into the Free Republic search window, a list will come up of past searches I've conducted that begin with that letter.

Those are supposed to get wiped out with the bookmarks, if all my personal info was messed up.

No, and I don't have a 7 key.

Firefox has changed folders in different versions I believe. For example, the old bookmarks might be in
%SYSROOT%\Documents and Settings\{USERNAME}\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\{alphanumeric_code.slt}\bookmarks.html

My new bookmars are in
%SYSROOT%\Documents and Settings\{USERNAME}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{alphanumeric_code.default}\bookmarks.html

Great. Now just tell me what your IP # is and turn off your firewall.

Same damn thing happened to me. But when I type in, from Explorer, the window opens and is firefox and I never opened firefox.

I don't know what this means but I am maintaining a low profile and not challenging anyone. I have the feeling that Explorer hijacked my mozilla.

Another cool little extension along the lines of that in #6 is Foxmarks -- backs up your bookmarks to a web server and lets you sync them across several computers.
