Detroit 6, NY Yankees 0

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers didn't waste this homecoming, and Kenny Rogers made every pitch count.

In a ballpark normally locked up by October, the Tigers got 7 2-3 shutout innings from Rogers and outplayed New York in a 6-0 victory, pushing Detroit within one win of shocking the Yankees into an early winter.

The 41-year-old Rogers, one of the few Detroit staffers who doesn't fire 100 mph fastballs, used every pitch in his personal stash to blank a revamped Yankees' lineup for his first career postseason win.

As if conjuring the spirit of former Tigers phenom Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, Rogers spent much of the evening talking to himself on the mound. It was unusual behavior on a night when a full moon hung over the ballpark.

Rogers' first win over the Yankees since 1993 came at the perfect time for the Tigers, who were playing their first postseason game in Comerica Park, the first playoff game in The Motor City since 1987 at Tiger Stadium.

WE BELONG BABY!!!!!

One more to go.

I am beginning to think the collapse may have been a blessing in disguise for the Tigers. They have a much better chance to take the Yanks in a five-game series, than if it went seven games. And winning the Division didn't exactly work out for the Twinkies, did it?

Hopefully now they can handle the pressure of being up 2 games to 1, better than they handled the games against the Royals last weekend.

The Curse of A-Rod continues (or is it Hillary!)

Their manager and catcher have won the WS before and there are guys on this team who have been in the playoffs.

Yankees have the best hitting line up but their starting pitching and middle relief is inferior.

I hope they lose. It will be a pleasure watching the NY media eat that team up and seeing George bust a blood vessel.

was he that good, or were their bats that bad? Other than Damon's 3-run dinger thursday, they have been ice cold.

As an aside, I love those spots with Lasorda trying to coax fans of other teams to watch the playoffs, especially the one with the Bosox fan.

(Ok, this is the correct thread) Did you see the Yanks vs Detroit tonight? Wow, what a game! Kenny Rogers was awesome. Seeing the Yankees get beat that bad is a beautiful thing... :o)

Kenny had the nasty curveball working tonight, when it's working, he makes opponents look ridiculous. Nobody would have hit him tonight.

Rogers was all choked up when they interviewed him. The Yankees have always owned him in the past and nobody could figure out why Leyland put him on the mound tonight.
