Yeah, he's a real smart guy too. He's a Civil War buff.

Lou Piniella new manager of NY Yankees...

If so, I predict the Yankees will not win the AL East. Lou Piniella is a nut. What was the guy doing in Tampa Bay his last season - starting relivers and having the starters pitch as closers?

Piniella used to be a good manager. Later in his career he turned into a nutter.

I love Joe but I believe he has lost his spark. Look he did not even get off his butt and argue that dam call at third base. A-Rod tagged the runner out and the blind ump called him safe! Why did Joe just sit in that dugout? He should have been on the field yelling and screaming!

ARod is paid an astronomical amount of money and doesn't deliver, and they fire the Manager. Go figure/

No clutch hitting, no consistent pitching.

Folks like Sheffield, Giambi, A-Rod, etc can't get clutch hits in the playoffs. It's not a one-time thing - it's been a problem year after year. When you have A-Rod batting 8th inthe PLAYOFFS, you know you're in trouble...

And pitching? Johnson is done. Through. His back problems are getting worse. His slider was missing badly later in the season. He ran out of gas, and he's doing earlier and earlier in the season as he gets older.

should be:

He ran out of gas, and he's doing *so* earlier and earlier in the season as he gets older.

Could it be that Joe already knew he was going to be fired, no matter the outcome of the season?

Is your post suggesting that Torres is responsible for all of this? Is Torres the one who is making the player personnel decisions? I don't know the answer to this, that's why I'm asking.

I don't know? It's George's fault and not Bush! We need pitching. Melky should have played more, get rid of Pavano, Wright, Johnson, Sheffield and A-Rod.

Well, at least the Yankees did better than my Giants (who have become perenial losers since letting Dusty Baker go).

As I said on other threads:

1. You can buy players, but you can't buy A TEAM.

2. As the Yankees SHOULD HAVE LEARNED back in the 1960s when they got beaten by the Dodgers and Cardinals, good pitching ALWAYS defeats good hitting. Its an old cliche, but one of the truest.

3. What's left of the old late 90s lineup is showing its age.

4. Yankees are at their best when they draw from their own farm system (George Herman Ruth being the great exception) and at their worst when they try and depend on buying Marquee players (see the late 60s-early 70s, mid-late 1980s, and this decade).

5. Torre is a scapegoat. The buck stops with King George (who doesn't seem to learn from past mistakes) and Brian Cashman. Nevertheless, when heads are lobbed off, the manager is always the first to go to the guillotine.

With the Yankees you do have next year to look forward to. With my Giants, I can only look forward to more mediocrity.

"So Ichiro isn't worth anything?"

Of course he is, and one day George will pay what he's worth and he'll be wearing pinstripes. Wait for it.

"They never got Edgar."

No, but they took Tino. Edgar was a class act, wasn't he?

Wouldn't it be funny if he ended up in Boston?

You're kind of going overboard with that. The Mets have plenty of players they bought on their team. (and the highest payroll, by far, of any team remaining in the playoffs) And you know what, they were smart to sign Beltran, and the Yankees were dumb for not going after him. How many of the Mets pitchers didn't come from other teams? I don't understand why you wouldn't enjoy your teams success, instead of getting angry about other teams.

Well George is a problem, but I don't see the same enthusiasm in Torre as years passed. By the way Clemenza I am rooting for the Mets. The first time in my life!
