The jury's verdict is also contrary to the rotten meat doctrine promulgated by the Romans.

The idea was that if you sent a shipment of meat by oxcart to a customer and it arrived rotten, it was not the fault of the oxcart driver, nor the ox, nor the cart, nor those who built or maintained the road.

The meat was understood to carry with it the "seeds of its own destruction", and it was the responsibility of the sender to make sure he sold only what he could deliver ~ so the burden of rotten meat was his alone.

Here the seeds of destruction were sown by none other than the complainant when he first made an effort to acquire penile warts.
