KENNETT SQUARE, PA Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to improve a week after his right hind leg cast change. Barbaro is wearing his new cast comfortably and his vital signs and appetite remain excellent, said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery at Penns George D. Widener Hospital.
Barbaros left hind foot, which had a large portion of the hoof wall and sole removed because of severe laminitis, is gradually improving. The hoof is growing slowly, but he has a long way to go, especially along the front of the hoof, said Dr. Richardson. We still have many months of healing ahead of us. The foot will require meticulous care for a long time.
Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvanias George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.
The next update will be posted on Tuesday, October 24, unless there is a significant change in Barbaros condition.
Same as last week ping.
Good news. Poor baby, he's had quite a time.
Thanks for the update.
Yes. Looking good.
You're welcome.
I question the "improve" part:
Yes, let's hope for the best. Ever since I read "Black Beauty," I have had a soft spot for horses.
Oh my.
That would be "Barbro" - a horse of a different color.
To steal a little from Herman's Hermits and the Henry ("Hennery") the VIIIth song:
"Second verse same as the first!"
Keep it up, Bobby Baby! Left hoof-front, grow! Grow, hoof-front, Grow!
*doing magic abracadabra hand motions now*
Grow, darn ya, Grow!
Go Barbaro Go!
Well, she does look comfortable, at least.
I'd say she needs to borrow Barbaro's sling.
Many thanks for the update. I appreciate your efforts.
"C'mon, Barbaro! Keep healing, young man! You are loved."
"I'd say she needs to borrow Barbaro's sling."
Yep. Either that or she ought to be put in it...and left there until she learns to stop trashing President Bush and our country.
I'm not advocating torture, you understand. Just a place "to hang" until (or if) her head straightens out.
You're welcome.
Glad for the updates Gate on Barbaro. I cried when got hurt!
Thanks, gate....seems to be doing ok?
