Why, oh why, do libs hate this man?

Maybe because they feel inferior to his intellect.

They should. Wish I had Secretary Rumsfeld's brain power!

Thank you for your service, Mr. Rumsfeld! We'll probably never know how many times you pulled us out of harm's way.

"He was the right man at the right time but he got brain freeze smewhere along the line.'

Completely agree. I like and respect Rummy immensely, but this past year has been a virtual stalemate. We need fresh ideas on how to kick butt in this war. I'm sad to see him go, but I think it is for the best.

Bush thought he could ride out the election without handling the new reality on the ground in Iraq. We need to build a few bases in Iraq and pull back to them and let the Iraqis take care of Mookie. The Sunnis better be careful they could be wiped off the map in Iraq.

Your sentiments were mine precisely.

The only possible saving grace in this departure [ obviously requested ]: In their smoky back room, they obviously concluded that Pelosi and the Rats primary attack on the WOT...would be to force Rummy into non-stop hearings...hamstringing his effectiveness...and giving the RATs endless public theater, and sound-bites to huff and puff and blow the White House down.

Mr. Rumsfeld - thank you for your unselfish years of service to our country. Your masterful handling of the SecDef press conferences made it worth my while to watch. The history books will ultimately reflect your efforts to transform our fighting forces into the 21st century military we needed at this time.

Mr. Rumsfeld, you are the only MAN in power in the US that I truly admire. Your departure is saddening.

I won't even say what I'm thinking -- beyond that I'm not happy about this AT ALL.

"We need to build a few bases in Iraq and pull back to them and let the Iraqis take care of Mookie."

Pretty much my feelings as well. Maintain a presence in country, but outside of the major populations areas to discourage Syria and Iran. Then let the Iraqis sort out their internal security problems.
I would also like to see the Iraqis pushed hard by the US toward developing 3 separate states under a central federal United Iraq government. One for the Kurds, one for Sunnis and one for the Shiites with Baghdad being a separate federal district. Each state can develop their own social laws respective to their cultural and religious beliefs. They can even have their own militias. There would be issues as to border placement for each state, but as long as the national wealth is federally owned and managed, the problems of who gets what in terms of national resources is unchanged and maybe even improved. It then becomes more a matter of defining states by traditional territories that are already in place. By each major group having their own constituionally defined homeland, it takes off a lot of internal pressure among the factions.

Amen, thank you Mr. Rumsfeld. Your leaving is not your fault, it is the fault of your boss, for his failures of leadership in the war and failure to defend himself adequately from relentless attacks. You were good at responding, but you were alone.

Bush 43 shared Bush 41's congenital inability to argue persuasively with bitter opponents, to respond quickly to lies and media pressure. You are the victim.

Folks, if you want to engage in substantive debate on teh SecDef or the WOT, kindly use one of the many threads announcing Mr. Rumsfeld's resignation. Ping me to your post there and I'll engage you in further discussion. But not on our thank you card, please.
