A Boeing 777 is heading for the breaker’s yard for the first time, just 11 years after the twinjet first entered service.
Memphis-based Universal Asset Management says it has acquired a General Electric GE90-90B-powered 777-200 (MSN 27109) - the nineteenth aircraft off the line - for disassembly.
According to Flight’s Acas database, the aircraft was originally delivered to British Airways (BA) in January 1996 as G-ZZZE, being one of five non-Extended Range variants that the airline operated. The aircraft was a sister ship of G-ZZZA pictured below.
It was traded to Boeing in 2002 and after initially being placed with the now defunct Algerian carrier Khalifa Airways in 2003, entered service with Varig of Brazil as PP-VRD in 2004.
The aircraft was returned to Boeing in August and is now registered N703BA.
Universal, which has disassembled over 160 airliners in the past 10 years, says that this marks the first disassembly of a 777 and that component parts will be available for sale in the near future.

The Algerians must've really abused the plane to turn it into an unrecoverable basket case in such a short time.

Yeah, No Kidding.....
BTTT
All the airlines want the ER model. It has more value as parts than as a working aircraft. No 777 has ever been written off, so the only source of parts is Boeing and they are all new.
VARIG is Brazilian, not Algerian. And the non-ER variant isn't particularly desirable these days; United, who was the launch customer and has a bunch of early non-ER versions, has many of them parked in the desert (though I don't think they're being sold or broken up anytime soon).
No joke. The USAF has planes that are 50, and they have led hard lives.
Keep planes young. I hate that American runs these 25+ year old MD-80's. Time for them to recycle to totally new planes as well. Latest 737's and 787's I'd say.
ping
They'll probably replace the Mad Dogs with Boeing's Y-1.
Is the Y1 the 787?
No, Y2 is the 787. Y1 will be the 737 replacement. Y3 will be the 777/747 replacement.
I'd rather ride in an old MD-80 than a new Grey Hound Bus with wings 777 any day. I hate 777s.
Good, maybe I can keep mine flying a few more years now. I need rear door to replace the one I'm holding shut with a wire hanger, and a nosecone to replace the one I dented pulling into the garage.
?
wtf, you'd choose a side engine DC-9 derivative crashola over a perfect record 777?
From 1968-2003 one of my hobbies was taking slides of airliners (it ended when 9/11 occurred )
I have a slide of G-ZZZC and GZZZD but not E
Took them landing in Philly
