made a quick trip to eBay to see what the new Sony stations are going for, with 4 minutes left, it looks like the current bid for one is 33,100. This, is nuts.

It's John Edwards!! He's desparate!!
Just goes to show you how many people have more dollars than sense ;-)
Winning Bidder: BreckGirl.
It was a Nintendo Wii.
Actually it was a Wii, still funny though.
This is really stupid. How many hours do parents have to work to provide the latest trendy game to their children? It's so predictable that these companies release this stuff right at Christmas time because they know the little sheeple will get up before dawn, stand in long lines for (purposely) limited supplies, fight with each other (and I even heard this morning, someone got shot standing in line for one of these). STUPID!
Does anyone remember the same crap for Teddy Ruxpin & all the other hot toys in the past? Wouldn't it be a far more valuable lesson for children to take that same money & do something good for someone less fortunate?
Doubt that, but in 6 months there shouldnt be a supply problem anymore.
In now infamous words, kind of " Go to school, study hard, do well, or else you might end up living with Mom and Dad and getting stuck in front of a Best Buy in bad weather"
I get all my guitars and basses here: rondomusic.net.
I dropped my $139 1962 Fender Jazz bass replica flat on solid concrete a few weeks ago. Still works perfect. Fortunately all the scratches are on the back...
Sony is intentionally under supplying the market to create hype. The MSRP right now is $499(20GB harddrive) and $599(60GB). While I probably over stated the actual price drop, but consumers are already complaining about the price. If sales don't meet expectations after the holidays, look for a dramatic price drop.
Bidding closed now. Final bid $9,101.00
Must have been John Edwards that ran for VP - I heard on the radio this morning he has his staff calling and giving WalMart a hard time to get an advanced machine.
They remembered him from his campaign and how much he put down the company and leaked it.
There are more than 7600 listings on Ebay for the PS3. I wonder how many of those buyers will ever collect the thousands supposedly being bid???
Anyone know how to check that? I would be interested in seeing how many actually collect that money.
Sony is losing 300 dollars per machine and they will continue to sale it at current retail until next Christmas at least. XBox 360 has been out for awhile now and still hasnt dropped prices even though sales have dropped a bit, MS says no price drops for awhile.
lots of silly bids;

I also forgot to mention there are huge yield problems on the cell processor and Sony is actually sending some of them out with only 6 out of 7 processors working. This is one of the problems why they are in limited supply and will be until that is fixed.
WHAT ABOUT MEEEeeeee?!!!!
They didn't leak it -- the couldn't announce it fast enough -- and rightfully so.
This is not a slam at you a_l, but I find that hard to believe. Is there a source for that info?

Report: Sony losing hundreds on each PS3
iSuppli breakdown pegs cost of manufacturing $499 20GB console at $805, $599 60GB console at $840.

When the Xbox 360 went on sale last year, BusinessWeek commissioned tech researcher iSuppli to take apart the console and estimate how much it cost to manufacture. The firm concluded that, including all pack-in accessories (hard drive, controller, cables, and so on), each premium 360 set Microsoft back some $126. Before labor, just the parts it took to make the console cost $470--$71 more than the full-fledged system's $399 price tag.
This week, iSuppli conducted a similar cost-analysis study of the PlayStation 3--with even more shocking results. According to the study, the hardware for the 20-gigabyte PS3 costs $805.85 alone--$306.85 more than the stated list price of $499. The 60GB model hardware costs $840.35, $241.35 more than the $599 sticker price Sony announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year. (Note: Sony did not announce price points of $499.99 and $599.99 at E3, although some retailers list the consoles' prices as such.)
While Sony will lose hundreds of dollars on each console sold, this consumer hopes to make thousands on her PS3.
Neither of the iSuppli estimates includes the cost of the A/V cables, power cord, or Sixaxis controller that come bundled with both models of the PS3. The initial launch shipment will also come with a Blu-ray disc copy of the Will Ferrell comedy Talledega Nights. "The size of Sony's loss per unit is remarkable, even for the videogame console business," read the iSuppli report.
However, despite the steep price, iSuppli still thinks the PS3 delivers plenty of bang for a buyer's buck. "The reason why the PlayStation 3 is so costly to produce is because it has incredible processing power," said Andrew Rassweiler, teardown services manager and senior analyst for iSuppli. "If someone had shown me the PlayStation 3 motherboard from afar without telling me what it was, I would have assumed it was for a network switch or an enterprise server."
Though it had no breakdown of the Wii, this week's iSuppli study did comment on the cost of another next-gen console. Thanks to streamlined processes and ample component supplies, iSuppli estimates that Microsoft now makes $75.70 per Xbox 360 console.
Last night they were approached by somebody who was going to pay them each $1,000 cash for their spot in line. They had to sleep out on the sidewalk overnight, but hey -- not a bad gig for a grand...
