this is really bad if the guy was saying something about someone else, as it then usually gets back to the person
I've got one one for you: gossip. That's what you've described here. And it's a real embarrassment to women. I try very, very hard not to participate and it's got much to do with why I don't have many lady friends.

"...allowing men to become "deaf" to the most logical of arguments put forward by their wives and girlfriends."
It would be nice if we got "logical arguments", but mostly it is prattle, or whining, or talk we are not particularly interested in hearing, much less responding to at the time. I say this and acknowledge my wife of 24 years is one of the smartest and hardworking women I have ever known. Still, sometimes, I just want some non-conversation.

and his e-mails to relatives are frequently under 50 words. When I started e-mailing one of my aunts several years ago, she always said that she wanted to get a "newsy" e-mail from me. IOW, my e-mail's were oftentimes very short. Dad's e-mail's to his sister are oftentimes short too. LOL
My dear departed grandmother on the other hand though, she'd send snail mail letters to friends and relatives on stationery paper, and they were often times several pages long.
I will always remember getting her letters when I was in college. She'd write up a very newsy letter and put a stick of Wrigley's Spearmint gum in with the letter. She always loved giving us kids a stick of gum, even when us kids would come over to visit her and grandpa.
