OCCOQUAN, Va. -- Authorities said a Woodbridge boy has drowned after escaping from a police cruiser parked on a bridge.
Police said the boy leaped over a concrete barrier and into the Occoquan River early Saturday morning.
Virginia State Police Sergeant Terry Licklider said it's unclear why 16-year-old Rodger Rodriguez jumped off Interstate 95 and into the river about 60 feet below.
He said authorities don't know if Rodriguez was just trying to escape and didn't realize what he was trying to jump over.
The boy's mother, Gloria Elena Rodriguez, told The Washington Post her son was familiar with the area along the highway.
Rodriguez was pulled over about 3:20 a.m. for speeding and was arrested for drunken driving and driving without a license.
At the time he escaped, Rodriguez was sitting in the front passenger seat of the cruiser with his hands handcuffed behind his back
Gloria Rodriguez said her son would never have intentially jumped into the water. She said she doesn't know what she will do now without her only son.
The teenager's mother and stepfather are asking authorities to investigate exactly what happened.
Virginia State Police say they will have a routine internal investigation, but also say it appears the trooper involved followed procedure.
Oh, and one other thing: he's an illegal alien, brought into this country by his mom, who also is illegal. And she's screaming bloody murder about the whole thing, saying it was the cops' fault!
Not that the story fails to mention that he was drunk or speeding, but that his mom actually testified to the local news reporters that he "likes to drink beer" and "he likes to drive fast"...
Somehow, some deep pockets will be identified as causing this, probably the police or the school system, or some other Taxpayer-funded entity.
The inmates are running the asylum.
The anti-immigration bigotry and hatred in this country are responsible for killing this boy.

This is the second time he's done this, BTW. The first time he was pulled over for DUI, he escaped from the police cruiser as well. Too bad for him, this time he escaped off a 60-foot high bridge!

We have a large river that runs right through the center of town (Spokane, WA). People are always jumping in it when chased by the police, presumably to escape, but mostly they just drown.

Alcohol can make anyone a Darwin Award candidate. Jumping into a river with his hands behind his back? Wow.
No matter what his immigration status it is sad to hear of a 16 year old dying like this. Though it is better news than hearing of him killing some innocent through his drunken antics.
His mom should find out who sold him booze and go after them.
Oh, forgot another little tidbit: his step-father is also an illegal. Mom and Step-Dad are all over the local news-waves today, complaining about this "terrible" thing, and "demanding" an investigation. I just wish someone at ICE would proceed with an investigation!
Hard to feel sorry for a drunk, illegal alien, driving without a license and on his SECOND drunk driving incident!
