GADSDEN, Ala. A 5-year-old boy who was asleep in the back of a car when it was stolen from the parking lot of an Albertville convenience store was found dead Tuesday morning in a neighboring county, authorities said.
A dispatcher with the Etowah County Sheriff's Department said the body of Geontae Glass was discovered in a rural area. Officials planned to release details at a mid-morning news conference, said the dispatcher, who did not give her name.
An FBI spokesman did not immediately return phone calls, and further details weren't available.
The child was abducted shortly after 6 a.m. Monday from a store in Albertville in Marshall County, about 80 miles northeast of Birmingham.
Authorities said the boy's mother left him asleep in the back seat of her car with the engine running while she went inside a store to buy juice. Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of a pickup truck and get into the vehicle before driving away as someone else drove off in the pickup truck.
Alabama state troopers and Albertville police issued an Amber Alert for the boy, who was last seen in his mother's light blue 1994 Nissan Altima. Overnight lows dipped into the mid-20s.
Troopers announced Tuesday that the Amber Alert was canceled but provided no other details.
She so failed the basic protection clause of being a parent. So sad I am shaking here.
I wonder how you pronounce "Geontae"?
Poor little boy :(
Speaking of which,
yours here yet?
This is so sad. Prayers for this little boy and his family.
Perhaps I'm a failure too, then. I can understand her reasoning: it's cold, kid's asleep in the car, so leave it running so that the heater will stay on.....
Had it been me, I'd have turned the car off and locked the doors. In retrospect, the lady made a bad error. Personally, I blame the thief/murderer, but maybe that's just me.
Jon-tay, I'm guessing.
Nope, not till January.
That way, I don't have to help un-decorate the Christmas tree. >:-)
I think the blame falls on the guy who stole the car and (presumably) left the boy to die...
I don't leave my kids alone in the car, but I understand it's not an unusual thing to do in some places.
Smart girl!
It's *possible*, though unlikely IMO, that the thief never knew the kid was there. Even if that was the case, the charge ought to be 1st-degree murder, with the guy driving the other vehicle being an accessory to murder.
The mom is going to spend the rest of her life regretting her decision, but the thief is the criminal who is responsible for the child's death.
Don't ever leave your young child in the car alone. I've been tempted alright, believe me, come very close-- but it's clearly not worth it. I personally know someone who did something quite similar to the mother in this one and had her car stolen with her infant inside. Luckily, that one turned out okay when the thief ditched the car after seeing the infant inside it.
I will never understand how anyone can be that cruel.
I apologize, looks like you were right after all.
Didnt mean to be right, just knew something was very wrong in the story.
how bizarre now looking back to know the killer was mom and boyfriend....
sorry I just had a gut feeling on this one.
