LOL!
I have to say I don't know quite what my rules/parameters would be.
I just know that most of these names now are pretentious.
However, I also am not crazy about using the old, "timeless", and far-overused names. JOHN being the worst.

Anyone with a "La" in their name is bound to be either a stripper, a bartender, a welfare mom, or a crack whore.
OK, so I am generalizing a bit...

Nanci
Ashleigh
Brandi
Suzzanna
Suzzannah
Candyce
Gennifer
If people want to give unique names, why not pick legimate, existing names that aren't used very often, like Ingrid or Henrietta?

I was thinking of naming a boy Lincoln. Not because of the Pres (whom I don't much like), but because of my most beloved car....and it's certainly masculine enough.

My given name is far too boring for my tastes. I wish I were named Octavian. Or Xerxes. Or perhaps Zarathustra.
To: Covenantor
Chuck never could play the name game though.

Be careful though. Many names on the top 20 list for the past few years (for girls) are names that were popular 70-80 years ago.
So you may find that your kids' names become popular again.

I thought that was a girls name? Nope---just Irish. I grew up with a guy named Shannon, and he was the toughest mf'er in town.

I'm not much fond of Germanic female names - not largely, anyway. Too "masculine" and also just too awkward, maybe.
Male names, another issue. Germans are very good at masculine names. My dad is Gerhardt.
Irish names are too effeminate. Might be good for girls, but terrible for boys.

We finally settled on Annette in honor of Annette Island in southeastern Alaska, which is where she was conceived. Lucky for her she wasn't conceived in the back of an Econoline van!

Well the Shannon I know is an adorable 3 year old and my daughter loves him!

My neighbor is a school teacher who has a little girl named Shithead (pronounced "shi-theed") in her class. No, I'm not joking. This one is less surprising when you find out that it's a reasonabyl common name in either Thailand or India... I forget which off the top of my head. i.e., it's cultural, just unfortunate in an English-speaking area.
