The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I live on the Carson Trail. About 2 miles north of the Carson River and probably about 5-6 miles from Fort Churchill.

The metal rings are still there.

Someone in the 20's or 30's built a fence on his property from all the old rifles found discarded in the 40 mile Desert. It really is a horrible place, I can't imagine riding a horse through there, let along pulling a wagon. We had trouble getting a Land Rover up one of the hills. The ATV I was riding stopped about 3/4 the way up and my son had to come and get it, go to the bottom and start over.

Yeah - but you know we want to see 'em, so sometimes you have to grin and bear it (not bare it!) ;~)

I think the same thing about early explorers and settlers here. The undergrowth is so thick in places, I can't imagine what the first guy had to go through to get here.

Coming across country on horseback I imagine you could follow deer trails or Indian trails but wagons ???? Some of the old mining sites around here you can still follow the wagon ruts into them. They had to move boulders to get through and they must have had a team of eight or ten at least to get up the grades.

Boy, those pictures of the Carson Trail sure look desolate. I just can't imagine the dread they must've felt when looking out over that vast expanse of salt and alkali flats. And to think of the fates of the poor horses and oxen that had to take them across it is just more than I can stand to think about. {shutter}

Well, I'm depressed....I just came in from brushing my horse, (and BTW was that a job, he had dirt caked on him from head to tail), but he has lost so much conditioning. That nice round tight butt is just so loose now...He just really looks bad, and altho his weight is good, it looks like he's lost some, which he needed too, but it could be he just looks narrower in his back because he has lost so much muscle tone...I don't know..

Don't ask for a picture:), I don't even want to take one..LOL.

Celia is coming around 1 and we are going to ride a couple of hours today, and she is taking vacation all next week, so hopefully by the end of next week we will be back in a good routine that I will be inspired to keep up with on my own...

Take a picture now, so you can compare it to a new one in two months when you're proud of what you see.

He'll come back :~)

OK, I took a picture anyway, mainly because I want to compare how he looks in a months time. The dark spots on him are stains where dirt was caked, and the really dark one on his hip was mud and he is still wet there. It's too cold to hose him off, he wouldn't dry till tomorrow.

What a pig :~)

I get really jealous when I look at Cyn. Bay is hairy and gets as caked as that. Cyn is sleek, but more than that, she's like teflon. She rolls, gets up, shakes, and she's pretty clean!

Celia is bringing me some square bales for now. Her round bales are where it would be hard to get them since the ground is so soft and wet. But that's the route I've decided to go is with round bales for each horse. They'll get turned out thru the day to eat on them, and then locked up in their runs at night.

The square bales will work till we can get to the round ones.

I'm wishing I had taken one before I brushed him....good lord, he was dirty.

Kristy's horse Rowdy is like Cyn. Very little winter coat, so it's nothing to keep him clean, LOL, I get jealous too:)
