I saw the 'new Animals', sans Burdon, in a bar in Indianapolis the size of a phone booth in 1969 or 70. I've seen Burdon fronting the 'Animals' on two occasions at the IMAC in Huntington, N.Y. the last time, I was in the front row. Hearing eventually returned [when I saw the Searchers last summer also front row. Much easier on the ears].

Interestingly, Burdon does a lot more of the old Animals stuff than the newer crap these days. Smart move.

I saw the Blues Project at the Cafe A Go Go. You're right about the booze. Only club I ever went to where I watched a band while I was eating an ice cream sundae.

I saw Eric Burdon and in 1980 at "The Channel" in Boston and he was a smash. A top concert memory. All the hits were done great. One of my faves is "Don't let me be Misunderstood". I saw Eric in 2003 at a Florida racetrack and it quite unsatisfying because he did a lot of his tunes in a jazzy scatting style. I was pissed. He had a perfect chance to do justice to the Animals' legacy and he blew it!

Searchers - Saw then do a few tunes at some mayor's concert series on the steps of Boston city hall circa 1992. I'm impressed by the way the Searchers soldier on and are loyal to their songs. They don't try to riff off them the way Eric did.

The Byrds were a favorite back then. Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson are favorites today too. I guess I like that Anglo-American folk rock groove. The Rolling Stone's peak for me was back when they did country rock, influenced by Graham Parsons and Ry Cooder. GP was the Byrds-Stones link

"House of the Rising Sun"

Eric Burdon is supremely pissed because he gets no royalties. The group was told there was only enough room for Alan Price to be credited

Alan Price is the only band member given credit for arranging this, meaning he is paid almost all the royalties. Their record company told the other members that there was not enough room to list them as arrangers.

The only hit I've seen the Searchers change around, strangely enough, is "Love Potion #9". When I saw them at Madison Square Garden in 1972 [part of a Nader package], they revved it up, and put a blistering guitar solo in the middle [McNally was on his way to taking over lead from Pender]. Now, they generally play it 'straighter', but they leave the solo in. As for not riffing, I think a lot of that has to do with the fact they're a harmony band. Tough to riff when you're tied to the guy next to you.

The Searchers now do, as part of their show, some country western stuff that fits their sound, and some stuff by other artists, including Midler's "The Rose", and "Tambourine Man". One of the things that honks me off big time is that they're not in the Hall, but the Byrds, who ripped them off, are. And now the DC5. Is there no shame?

There's a quote on the liner notes from a CD by Chris Hillman ["Like a Hurricane"] from a few years back, on cut 7 ["When You Walk in the Room"]:

"One of my favorite memories of the last 35
was playing at a club called Ciro's on the
Sunset Strip.Prior to our first "hit single",
the Byrds played there every night over a
two-to three-week period. We borrowed this
song from the British group, The Searchers.
We borrowed a lot from The Searchers back
then."

Genesis has always been a class act. I have tickets to Toronto and may attend in Ottawa too! Wouldn’t miss it!
