You don't have a point.

You, on the other hand, do have a point, but if you comb your hair a little differently ...........

Nadal is one of the greatest clay court players of all time. He's a bit like Gustavo Kuerten used to be on clay. But overall, Federer is by far the better player. It's like saying a golfer who specializes in his short game or in getting out of sand traps or driving is better than Tiger. Federer losing to him in the finals is not exactly failing. Failing is getting bounced in the 1st round or the quarterfinals or something like that.

Also, Tiger has gone through stretches where his game falls off for a year or so and he has has to retool his swing. He comes back dominant but Federer hasn't had periods like that where he just doesn't get it done and finishes out of contention in slams and other tournaments

Federer also wins a heck of a lot of ther tournaments besides just the slams.

Tiger is great, but so is Federer. I think it's fair to say they're both at the top of their sport, and that no one else is really close.

Nicklaus won the Masters at 41. Tiger is every bit as strong, fit and good as Nicklaus was. I don't know anyone who has won a men's singles tennis slam when they were 41 in the recent past. Tiger will be wining slams for longer than Federer will.

You are either not very bright, or, you are just having a real bad day.

Just because one game (tennis) is much more physically demanding than the other (golf), thus careers are much shorter in tennis, has nothing to do with this discussion of excellence in one's sport.

Rationality is not your friend.

Well then... it looks as though the answer is clear. Tiger wins. Game, set and match.

ROFL!

"No, they aren't"

Yes they are.
About the only really "different" slam is the clay at the French, where Federer is regularly taken out.
The rest are not that much different in terms of playing.

"In addition to the clay court surface at the French Open, Wimbledon is played on grass. "

In general those who do well in the men's circuit at the US Open do well at Wimbledon as well.
You only have to look at Andy Roddick.
Clay is different, yes, but that is exactly where Federer (and Andy) keep failing.

"Women's tennis isn't subject to the same variations between surfaces as men's tennis -- mainly because women can't dominate the game on some surfaces with 135+ MPH serves like men can."

Rubbish!
WTF you talking about?
Women play on exactly the same surfaces as the men at the slams, on exactly the same courts, on exactly the same 14 days.

"I'd also make the case that Serena Williams has been so hopped-up on steroids over the years that she's basically a man playing in the womens' bracket anyway."

Groan!
The last desperate resort of a Canadian bigot is to resort to racist smears and innuendo.
Please, share this with us will ya?: Exactly when did Serena test positive for any drugs?
While you are about it, perhaps you will prove that there are no steroids used in the men's tennis circuit as well.

I second that emotion.

Nicklaus won the Masters at 41.

Actually Nicklaus won last in 1986 at the age of 46. (And finished 6th in 1998 at the age of 58.)

And those feats are far more rare in golf than in tennis. It is much more difficult to be "on" in golf all the time than in tennis. There is far less margin of error in golf as well. What Tiger has done in golf is simply amazing.

If you don't think there is a difference in surfaces between the Master, US Open, British and PGA then you are crazy. Yes, they are all grass. But playing a British Open course and the Masters is totally different.

Naaaah.
It's because in practice, and for the past few decades, older men have won more golf slams than older men have won tennis tennis slams, I am saying Tiger is more likely to be winning slams for longer than Federer will.
BTW, am having an excellent day.
Real question is: are you?
You sound like you just made love with an angry bear.

Well if you go by earnings, that would have to be Tiger at $87M in 2006. The dominant performer? Federer this weekend, but as Hot Tabasco says, 5 years from now...

I'm almost sorry I posted this thread. I really just wanted to honor both these great guys with this thread. What they both are doing is incredible.

These silly arguments by (one) are just that ....... silly.

Both these men are exquisite to see at their jobs, and I consider it a great treat in my life to be able to see both of them do what they do.

And I pray that both of them stay healthy for a very long time so that they can continue.

I would agree with that.
Its certainly far harder to win consistently in golf than it is to do the same in tennis.
