My group is almost exclusively women.
What I think happened was she's a very congenial, very polite person that tries to be very helpful. It's a plus in our group, and qualities I look for when I hire folks. Problem is, she internalizes pressures and it just got to the point where the safety valve blew.
Part of the problem turned on someone from another staff imposing too much on her time (she serves as a subject matter expert for me on budgetary distribution within our appropriation) looking for data and not backing off. She lost her cool. Problem is, the anger then spilled over to her team leader, me, and my boss in closely spaced, but unrelated conversations. So I ended up with four complaints, including my own. Needed to have the talk.
Approached the talk delicately, on the premise of allowing her the space to catch on her own that her approach wasn't exactly the best way of handling the situation. It was when the realization hit, she broke down emotionally.
I also think part of it is the stress she has in her own life--she's getting married in June, and that, too, is stressful. Lot of things hitting her. Her family preparing for the marriage, her preparing, her fiance, a very stressful job, her pushing herself to succeed.
I think her "issues" are mixing up, and the complexity of all this is playing too. Just the "one straw too many".
That may well be the only time you have a problem with her, as she sounds like a perfectionist!
So Friedman's impact on Sowell was profound. Not surprising...
As for Galbraith...OUCH!
He was the "biggie" in my h.s.(1966!!) econ class, and since I was influenced by my father, and had already read some Friedman, I was able to recognize Galbraith's distortions and flawed analysis..his anti-capitalism bias.
Not so confident of the rest of the muddle-headed students...:-(
Remember Buckley debating Galbraith??!!!
Sounds like Nifon has been drinking too much of your water.
NOT my pure well water! Durham's high lead level water.
I have had experiences similar to yours as a supervisor. I think your approach to the situation was excellent.
You couldn't ignore what happened, but you did allow her to come to the realization of what she did was inappropriate and thereby learn from it.
The emotional breakdown can be uncomfortable at best, as I have had both men and women hit that point (I always keep tissues handy as well!) after realizing the scope of their "error", mainly because they truly care about what they do and how well they do it.
I agree with Molly's observation that this lady is very unlikely to repeat this error.
Oh, excuse me. Nifong has been drinking too much Durhan water. lol
Granny, have you seen ole bradbeam say More ethenol needed to be produced in Iowa, last weekend? Previosly she said there was NO reason to produce any, plus she's voted 17 times against producing ethenol. What a broad!
So, how was the attitude adjustment with your friend?
This is one man who needs to be out of the profession for sure.
Good afternoon, Toby.
The evidence of Nifong's vast amount of wrong doing in this case is so overwhelming that he should be disbarred. (And Jailed for what he has done. IMO)
A reprimand would just be a slap on the wrist when what he needs is a sweep kick OUT of the DA office AND out of the law....since he IS an outlaw.)
A VERY enjoyable time. She is new to this scene and the better I get to know her, the better I like her.
One of the fellows in the group has a birthday today and took us all to dinner. It was a good opportunity to get to know some of the men, as we generally don't adjust our attitudes with them.
Speaking of ATTITUDES, mine is beginning to sour and I fear the need for more adjustment this evening.
Political Operative types are keeping files of this stuff the Nat'l Media (with the help of other D candidates) digs up.
It will not be a Slam Dunk for ole' Broadbeam here.
On another matter, if I can get my attitude adjusted in time, I plan to attend an event where Huckabee will be the speaker this evening. I'm interested in hearing him speak.
True, however, when you know there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, it isn't as wearing as when you have the ability to make change if you fight with your friends. In a couple of weeks I'll tell you more. I am working on some things that will just make your blood boil.
I'd like to hear all about it, too, IG.
Enjoy those "attitude adjustments" in the meantime!
I seem to remember an earlier program about him.
Well, then I'll check replay info on the 2 PBS stations we have in the area...
It's called the "Power of Choice"
Go to your local station, and see if it's on again there, too!
