Bears were not bores in 1985
Washington Times ^ | 2-1-07 | Dan Daly

MIAMI. -- Even if they win this Super Bowl, the '06 Chicago Bears will never measure up to the '85 Bears -- and don't they know it. I'm not talking about on-field accomplishments; I'm talking about off-field escapades. I'm not talking about the number of future Hall of Famers on the roster; I'm talking about number of Absolute Wild Men on the roster. In those two departments, the '85 Bears would whip the current edition about 73-0. The game would be over before Prince cleared his throat.

The club Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo have assembled is as nondescript as the Bears' uniforms, an almost perfect reflection of the understated head coach. Oh, every once in a while somebody does something screwy -- an Olin Kreutz breaks a teammate's jaw during an argument, a Tank Johnson gets charged with owning a six-pack of unregistered guns -- but for the most part the players are on their very best behavior.

""You had safety Gary Fencik, who dated a Playboy Playmate, and offensive tackle Keith Van Horne, who married the vice president's daughter. (OK, by then, he was the former vice president of the United States.) Alas, they divorced a short time later. "I married him for all the wrong reasons," Eleanor Mondale said. "

Yeah, it's a real shame the Bears' owner and coaching staff concentrated on putting together a good team rather than one who would entertain the press.

Someone please put the MSM out of my misery. Pretty please?

The '85 version of Da Bears kicked the crap out of my Pats. I was hoping for a rematch and a little payback.

No way DaBears win on Sunday. Not even Ditka could save this offense.

My Seahawks, on which every other starter was either injured or coming off an injury, came within a whisker of beating these "monsters of the Midway."

You had safety Gary Fencik

I used to love the way Fencik used to fly through the air, over the pile after the play was dead and he was late to the play. The camera would be zoomed in on the pile and all of sudden Fencik would fly by.

Listening to a little sports radio this morning, it seems the media's in a snit because Rex Grossman got a little testy with them at a press conference.

Gee, I can't imagine why - all he's heard from them this week is the same question over and over again, "How do you expect your team to win when you suck so bad?" And then they wonder why people hate them so much.

Interesting info from Wash. Times article:

"In fact, if passer rating is the yardstick, there have been no fewer than 10 Super Bowl QBs whose season was worse than Grossman's (73.9). And get this: six of them are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Have I got your attention now?"

I'm talking -- cover your ears, idol worshippers -- about Bart Starr (64.4) in Super Bowl 2, Joe Namath (72.1) in Super Bowl 3, Len Dawson (69.9) in Super Bowl 4, Johnny Unitas (65.1) in Super Bowl 5, Terry Bradshaw (a ghastly 55.2) in Super Bowl 9 and John Elway (73.7) in Super Bowl 24.

Funny, I don't remember any of them being called the Worst Quarterback in Super Bowl History. But then, they weren't being compared to Peyton Manning.

We tend to forget how wretched Bradshaw's career had been before he began filling his fingers with rings. Through that 1974 season, his fifth in the NFL, he had completed a mere 48 percent of his passes and had racked up many more interceptions (81) than touchdowns (48). Indeed, he had started the year on the bench and played in barely half of the Steelers' games; in none of them did he throw for more than 146 yards." http://www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20070131-123827-8614r.htm
