Michigan Lawmakers Propose Tony Dungy Day

LANSING, Mich. -- State lawmakers on Monday proposed a day honoring Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, who was born and raised in Michigan.
Dungy, whose Colts won the Super Bowl, is from Jackson, where he excelled in football at Parkside High School. He is the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.
"Because of the strength of his character, as well as his success on the field, Tony Dungy is an inspiration to all of us," said Senate Minority Leader Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, whose district includes Jackson.
Schauer plans to sponsor a legislative resolution proposing "Tony Dungy Day" along with Democratic Reps. Marty Griffin of Jackson and Mike Simpson of Jackson County's Liberty Township. They had not yet determined which day to honor Dungy.
For once words fail me!!
I should think there were more deserving individuals from that state to honor.

You would think but the politicians cant resist the opportunity to trumpet this historical day in Black history. /s It's too good of a thing to pass up for them.
I just wonder if Dungy and Smith are sick of hearing about the whole black thing. If it were me, I'd want to be remembered as a great coach first and foremost - not as a black coach.
I agree. I like to think I succeed on my own merits. It takes away from the person to imply that he is somehow inherently 'handicapped' IMO.

Dungy's tenure in Tampa Bay as the head coach of the Buccaneers brought greater attention to his personal accomplishments outside of sports. Tony Dungy has earned widespread respect both on and off the field due to what many see as strong convictions and high personal standards of ethics and behavior, which affect his behavior as both a coach and as a member of his community. He has been active in many community service organizations in the cities in which he has coached. While in Tampa Bay, Dungy worked as a public speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action.
He began a mentoring program for young people called Mentors for Life, and provided Buccaneers' tickets for the participants. He also supported other charitable programs in the area such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, the Prison Crusade Ministry, foster parenting organizations, and Family First. His community involvement and care continues in Indianapolis where Tony helped launch the Basket of Hope program which aids children at Riley Hospital for Children. He continues to assist Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club in Indianapolis. He also supports the Black Coaches Association National Convention and Indiana Black Expo.
Dungy is a devout Christian and at one point in his coaching career considered leaving football for the prison ministry.[1] Throughout his career, he has remained involved with community service organizations.
I never implied negative remarks against the individual. I don't think the Super Bowl win should be a precedent for this. I heard nothing of this last week so I assume it is publicity related.
Sounds like a good enough guy. It's a little hard to believe considering what Jackson seems to be producing these days. I may be wrong but I think FOX news white house corespondent Wendell Goler is also from Jackson.
They need to come up with a proposal for him to take over the Lions.

Thanks for that post. Dungy also should get a Super Bowl ring from the 2002 Buccaneers. He's the one that built that team.
