The U-S Attorney's Office and the New Jersey Legislature are set to square off in federal court tomorrow over records federal prosecutors want as part of a far-reaching political corruption investigation.
The Legislature's legal arm considers the documents confidential and has refused to release them.
The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that U-S Attorney Christopher Christie has subpoenaed internal memos, e-mails and other documents that the Legislature generates while drafting the annual state budget.
The documents are being sought as part of an investigation into whether any elected officials improperly directed money to certain pet organizations.
The current 30-point-eight (b) billion state budget contains more than 270 (m) million in last-minute add-ons, commonly known as "Christmas tree items."
The items were mostly put in by members of the controlling Democratic Party.
Here are the earmarks identified for New Jersey, which total $10,760,000. Check out the earmarks for your state and then call your congressman and ask if he or she sponsored any of your state's earmarks. If the answer is yes, ask why the congressman's name isn't on the earmark. If you recognize the institution designated to receive the earmarked tax dollars, call them and ask them what they intend to do with your money.
Then email us at info@examiner.com with the subject line "Earmarks" and tell us what you found out.
