If the Firefox browser were a car, it would be in the garage right now being souped up by an anxious group of gear heads.
When Firefox 3.0 is released later this year, the open-source browser is likely to contain a host of new features, including offline support for Web applications and new bookmark and search features. Mozilla released the second alpha version of Firefox 3.0 earlier this month.
While the final feature set hasnt been determined, Firefox 3.0 will also contain elements for its 4.0 release and beyond, said Mike Schroepfer, vice president for engineering for Mozilla, during a stop in London on Tuesday. The browser is due out in the second half of the year.
What were trying to do with all of these things is lay the foundation, Schroepfer said.
Perhaps most exciting could be Firefoxs ability to support writing an e-mail in, for example, Gmail while offline, with the data sent later when a user is connected to the Internet again. Ultimately, Mozilla engineers are aiming for an integration between the browser and Web-based services that is as smooth running as a desktop application, Schroepfer said.

Very promising!!
Bring it on!
For anyone who might want to give this a go in testing... be absolutely sure you back up your entire firefox profile first!!!!!!
I will keep 2.0,as I am still stuck in the dark ages running Windows ME.
Windows ME? Are you serious? Cripes. Windows ME's only use comes when you use the disc as a coaster. Even then, it might corrupt your drink.
That hurts;)
Browsing with FF 3a3....
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a3pre) Gecko/20070227 Minefield/3.0a3pre
Let the browser crashing begin!
BTW: the browser identifies itself as "Minefield". LOL
To be honest, I'm a lot more excited about pretty much all of the other features mentioned in this article, particularly the databasing of your cache.
I'm running Firefox 2 on XP and it seems to stall every 7 or 8 mouse clicks. Dialogue box indicates webaddress cannot be found and to "Try Again". Anyone else have this issue?
