[Home schooled] Cartoonists at work

Though some artists struggle for recognition their whole lives, two young Lake Los Angeles girls already have made a name for themselves with an inventive local comic strip that started at home on a lark. Alex Gonzalez's "At the Zoo" follows two tigers who mistakenly believe that it's the humans who are in the zoo, and they themselves are on the outside looking in.

"At the Zoo" has been published in Tidbits of Santa Clarita Valley, a free paper, since just before Gonzalez turned 12.

"At age 12, she had a job - that's pretty important," mom Angela Gonzalez said. "They love her (at the paper), because she's always made the deadline, for the last 2½ years."

Alex's little sister, Skyler, contributes regularly to the ideas and writing behind the strip.

"They sit down and brainstorm like any adults would," Angela said of their weekly creative process.

Skyler, 10, said she likes "coming up with the ideas so she can draw them, and I can see the comic strip at the end of the day."

The girls are schooled at home, and mom Angela said, "They love cats," noting that the family has a habit of taking in stray cats.

The comic started at the suggestion of a Tidbits employee, a friend of dad Louie, when the proud father began showing his daughter's artwork.

"They've always done things together, being at home," mom Angela said of the girls' hobby of creating art on their home computer.

“Alex and Skylar.” Girls. That’s truly sad.

Aside from that (which is hardly the young ladies’ fault), what a neat story. I think I’ll suggest that Anoreth and Bill start writing a cartoon about their brothers. There’s certainly enough comic material! Maybe Pat could be a lemur and James could be a bulldog, since none of them is very good at drawing humans.
