Two soppy humorless parents raised in the self-esteem culture and a milquetoast whiny brat who can’t take a joke.

So you'd be OK with this if it was your kid?

This is the parents’ fault, as well as the kid’s and teachers.
His behavior shouldn’t have been so bad during the year that the teachers felt a need to do this to him.

I got no sympathy for the kid or the parents. Good behavior=good consequences. Bad behavior=bad consequences. Pretty simple.

I would, but then again I didn't raise a whiney insecure kid.

Thank you!

Maybe it’s because I’m a woman but damn if I don’t think this is mean as all get out.

I understand very well we live in a culture where someone can get “offended” and the world curls up into a ball and sucks its politcally correct thumb.

But I swear to the good Lord this thing is just plain MEAN. I mean...it’s MEAN with no purpose at all.

I despise mean people. In general only liberals are mean. Mean-ness is a waste of time and resources. I could see these teachers sitting around and laughing about this sort of thing....when no one’s listening and it’s time to let off steam.

But to say this sort of thing to a young child? Why am I flabberghasted. What purpose does it serve but to hurt someone’s feelings?

Damn straight. And my kid would have been just as sarcastic as the teacher. My boy has a spine, a sense of humor and the morals and courage it takes to make it in the world. I raised him right and took an active interest in everything he did. He goes to college this Fall on a full ride for ACADEMICS. Hes a geek and proud of it.
The “oh my there are now winners or losers and we can keep score or it will emotionally damage the children” crowd do nothing but make the kids over protected and turn them into sheep. I raised my kid to be a wolf.

I'm probably going to be pilloried for this, but I am distressed when conservatives apologize for bullying, public humiliation, and such things. How many times have we heard that the kids who give other kids "wedgies" become conservatives and their victims become liberals? Even "dodgeball," a sadistic game in which kids try to hurt other kids they don't like as much as they possibly can, is defended in the name of conservatism.

No, I don't advocate "self-esteem" as the be-all and end-all of education. But bullying and public humiliation, conservative? And opposition to them is liberal?

I'm sorry anybody feels that way.

If they were so disruptive that the awards were deemed necessary by the teacher... Yes.

The worst of it wouldn’t happen until they had to explain to me why they got such an ‘award’... Then they’d really learn the meaning of sorry.

- At the conference I’d requested with the teachers, I would request that my child stand in front of the affected classes and apologies, then the regiment at home would get, entertaining, as to the activities they would be involved with... ;-)

Living in a neighborhood with a few retired DI’s when I was growing up has given me an insight into some unique and fitting punishments....

And not a spanking in site....

And yes, my son did do something incredibly stupid in 2nd grade... He’s never thought about doing anything like it since.... When he does seem to be headed for trouble, I just pull out some old photo's and leave them on his bed... No more problem...

Yep.

Being the butt of a joke every once in a while is something we all go through. School is supposed to prepare us to operate in the real world. Stuff like this happens all the time in the real world. Learning to laugh at yourself is a very important life lesson. This was harmless. The reaction is disturbing.
