DETROIT (AP) -- Gary Sheffield and the Detroit Tigers made Daisuke Matsuzaka pay for his lackluster location.
Sheffield hit one of Detroit's three homers off the Japanese star, Curtis Granderson took a home run away from Boston and the Tigers beat the Red Sox 6-5 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.
Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames also homered against Matsuzaka, who gave up three homers for the first time in the major leagues. Sheffield added two doubles off the right-hander.
"We're pretty good at hitting mistakes," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "It doesn't matter who is pitching."
After trailing 6-2, Boston scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to pull within a run. With runners on first and third in the ninth against Todd Jones, J.D. Drew fouled out to end the game.

LOL... Bledsoe?
The whole American league is tied up in a knot. Nice to see my Tigers going into the break with the momentum of a Bosox sweep.
The bosux, what more is there to say?
And somehow Jonesy gets another save.
not as good as ellsbury, or our three rookie of the year contenders, or the best 3-4 in baseball, or lights out closing, or still the best record in baseball.
but better than lugo.
What position did you play today and what’s your uniform number. :-)
What position you play?
Can we elect Jim Leyland as governor?
True: largely due to the quality of our pitching. The hitting...not so much. Manny R. and David O. are having off years. Manny's slump is more troubling, because Ortiz is not getting anything to hit. Willy "No-hit" Pena is not here for long, and I hope we get something decent in return for him. ON a positive note, Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo (also trade bait until recently) both seem to be coming around. It's hard to win consistently when you average 10 LOB every game and your average with RISP is below .250. Gotta give credit to Detroit - solid pitching and a productive hitting lineup. They are going to be tough in the playoffs.
Way to go Tigers! Hopefully they’ll start winning more at home so we can put the Tribe away.
By a half-game. But we're tied in the loss column.
Geeze...you sound like Warren Christopher in November 2000. ;-)
They appear to be picking up their home game. They won 2 of 3 against the tribe last week and finished this sweep today. They went from 2.5 or 3 games behind the indians to 1 game ahead.
Personally I think they’re a better team this year but they’ve had to hold the line with a depleted bullpen.
Maybe the Tigers can make a deal with the Rangers for some bullpen help.
Amen! If Granderson can get his batting average when facing southpaws up, he's got a shot at next year's All-Stars. My prediction, anyway, and you know I'm never wrong.
