Word For The Day, Thursday, August 2, 2007 - denouement

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

denouement \day-noo-MAWN\, noun
1. The final resolution of the main complication of a literary or dramatic work.
2. The outcome of a complex sequence of events.

Example sentences:
And perhaps this helps to explain the frequency of the violent denouement in contemporary novels: in the country that embraced the slogan "Today is the first day of the rest of your life," how do you call it quits on a character who is still breathing?
-- Brad Leithauser, "You Haven't Heard the Last of This", New York Times, August 30, 1998

Of course, the crusaders were losers in the short run, but Europe's storytellers have traditionally awarded them the righteous victory and not dwelt on the embarrassing denouement.
-- Todd Gitlin, The Twilight of Common Dreams

Etymology:
Denouement is from French, from Old French denoer, "to untie," from Latin de- + nodare, "to tie in a knot," from nodus, "a knot."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

That’s funny! In my head I can even hear the guy who yells “We must protect this house!” reading the caption.

There are some subconscious reasons why he had 5 sons and they all played football, don’t you think? Speaking of where he started, we have a local HS coach here named Jack Daniels. He’s a legend. Took off a couple of years when his boys were in HS and now he’s back.

the denouement of years of neglect and spending money on art and other "social" projects instead of infrastructure resulted in the bridge collapsing in Minnesota.

Mik’s daughter just HAD to flip to the denouement of the latest Harry Potter novel to ascertain the fate of the protagonist. ;)

That's a good one. Unfortunately, the couch-burning phenomenon seems to be spreading northward. There were a few incidents after the Steelers' Super Bowl win in Oakland.

Of course, that's extraordinary circumstances. Morgantown issues a "clear all debris off of your porches" edict before practically every WVU game.
